Lava and HFS, and a side question
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:11:53 pm »

Registered just to ask this qn.  =P

Anyway, I know some of the HFS things can survive in lava.  But I'm considering mining out a giant multilevel hall around the HFS and using an alternating arrangement of water and magma sprayers from the roof and walls.  Pressurized by many many pumps of course.

So yeah, they can survive in lava and water I'm sure.  But will my "encase in obsidian" plan actually work?

And uh... do cage traps work on them?  I would like to have a few as "pets" and "test subjects" for "new and fun creations".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, doesn't making obsidian stone into mechanisms make them lava-proof?  My obsidian mechanisms I built as test in my obsidian forge didn't go away until they got encased.

IF that doesn't work, I'll need to make admanatine stone mechanisms... -.-  waste of money...

Warning SoFs will cause water to boil some ~5 tiles away. Also, SoFs can't be caged.

The other HFS, however, can.

o.O 5 tile boil-aura?  Hmm... Now I really want one.  If only to drop it into the sea and watch what happens.

I've never heard of obsidian mechanisms being magma proof.  They work up to their point of failure and then...fail...like every other stone EXCEPT for bauxite and adamentine.  If you want to be certain your mechanisms are safe, import some bauxite.

Hmm.. what happens if a multi-z level, large square of natural rock drops on them?  There's no where for the body to go...

I'm hoping my magma-water combiners can do the obsidian forming in mid-air.

As RPGers say: "Rocks fall, everyone dies..."

=(  That's bad... bauxite is... doesn't seem to exist in my worldgen.  Traders don't have it.

Have you tried specifically requesting it from traders?  Set it to a higher priority and you'll pay extra for it, but they'll bring it(probably).

Otherwise you could...cheat.  Use utilities to turn something else into bauxite.  I recommend requesting it from traders.

Or try Molten Rocks mod. That makes lots of stones magma-safe.

Things that SHOULD be magma safe. Not just because we say so.

That's the thing, neither the dwarves nor the humans have bauxite available for requesting or I'd have a ton of the things already.  I'm looking for every way to spend my 18k (or was it 180k? I've an entire storage level dedicated to food) stack of food before they rot and goblin invasions aren't helping matters.  (as in they get slaughtered by my crossbows and the stuff I just sell)

 - I've taken to requesting all the expensive gems and precious metal bars, plus giving all merchants a 100% profit and 100% tribute.  =/  60 dwarves apparently eat less than I expect them to.  At least their happy from all the light yellow diamond windows I'm making.

Could I mod bauxite in somehow?  Like give traders it or something so I don't have to cheat to get more of it.

You could mod a smelter reaction to give you bauxite. I leave it to others to determine whether or not that would be cheating.
