So I have a war dog on chain, surrounded by cage traps like so. During a goblin raid, I didn't fully see what happened, but in the tile on the top right, I ended up with a bloody goblin iron bolt, and a dog inside a cage. None of my soldiers were anywhere near the combat. I suspect the dog got shot and his corpse triggered the trap?

Nope, it happens with all traps in that setup. The dog fell asleep. Since unconcious things trigger traps, even if friendly... You get dog in a cage. leave 1 tile on all sides for the dog to be and you will be fine:

^=trap
X=empty
R=rope/chain

The same goes for weapon traps. I figured out that setup after more than a few cats mysteriously vanished.

Dogs don't sleep. And creatures will not fall asleep on traps.

However, the dog can be knocked unconscious, at which point he will trigger the trap. Probably he got shot, blanked out from the pain, and stumbled into the cage trap.

Definately a new useful feature.

New? No. Creatures falling unconscious and triggering traps has been around for awhile now. In fact, the only reason creatures don't fall asleep on traps is because a bug report involving hunters (who just fall asleep wherever they happen to get tired) triggering fortress defense traps.

Useful? Maybe? I guess?

Anything in a cage is, as I recall, effectively in suspended animation.  So it can be useful for that.  Got a wounded dwarf who you don't want to waste time / space on, but which you don't want to risk a mood hit from his death?  Try to arrange for him to pass out on a cage trap, then put him in the center of your fortress for display.

It's like Dwarven healthcare or something.  I'll bet you could trade him to the elves and his friends still wouldn't get upset.  He's...  happier there.  Honest.

Dwarves in cages still get thirsty and hungry, so other dwarves will have to bring them food and drink just as if they were in a bed recovering. I don't know if they'll heal, get sleepy, etc. though.
