Booze and crops
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:48:55 am »

So, I understand that beyond the four basic booze types, there are some other exotic ones I can pick up from humies and elves.

Sunshine is the most valuable type, and it comes from elves, leading me to a dilemma: Toasted elves or sunshine?

So the question is, can I plant sunberries in a non-good biome? Similarly, can I plant whip vines in non savage biomes? Problem is that the wiki isn't too clear about this, it only mentions them growing wild.

Also, what does this 'wet/dry' environment mean?

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

You can plant them anywhere. It's just that they only occur in a specific place.
Or are sold to you.
Also, because vanilla crops are screwed up, you can plant above ground stuff all year long, but you have season specific underground crops. This makes sunberries and whip vines very useful. Unless you modded plants to grow more realistically.

You can also Gather Plants to find them, if you have the biomes.

Dry/Wet environments are determined by rainfall and drainage in the soil, for instance whether that area block is a desert or a swamp.  This would have been listed in your pre-embark map, F1, F2, F3 etc.

(Only way to verify after embark is either to spot other plants/animals that are unique to wet/dry (or whatever) biomes, or regen the world and relocate your embark site, and see what it says.)

The wiki has articles on these - try "biome" and "surroundings".

You can plant them anywhere.

I thought this was not the case.

You have to build a "greenhouse" (no glass needed), a covered above-ground farm plot, then you can grow evil plants in good biomes & etc.

I'm currently growing sun berries and whip vines in a neutral non-savage biome without any roof.

The key is to make sure you get the actual berries and vines, not just the seeds.

Yes, you can grow them both anywhere.

It's not that big a deal though, yes sunshine is the most valuable booze type but it's not like it's massively more valuable then any other type.

besides I hear it turns you into an elf, eventually. I'll stick with my dwarven rum if it's all the same to you.

I make sunshine so I get more goblinite ore delivered every year.  I also drink (whatever plump helmets are)

Mushroom wine.  It's about the worst thing I can think of, aside from drinking milk from a giant maggot.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

I tend to think they like it not for the taste

Heck i just give my dwarves good old plump helm wine. Sure they complain, but they the truly decent drink, legendary meal, and soothing water fall tend to counteract the tired of the same old booze.

You could just use a drawbridge to lock the elves in your depo.  That's what I do, and it has to added advantage of making my depo defendable/ a death chamber during a siege.

seize some sun berries off the elves, use the little delay before they actually leave to raise your bridge, then proceed with Project Chickenliver.

Whatever your specific version of Project Chickenliver is, anyway.

Could you point out where this is in the wiki?  I'll be happy to correct it, but I can't find the right spot at the moment.

I grow loads of whip vines in my neutral enviroment, on bare ground, no roof, no fertilisation, no magma (since that was bound to come up at some point anyway). Haven't tried good plants (yet) though, as the last elven caravan brought 4 pages of wood, 8 fisherberries and 4 wild strawberries. That's it.

Don't know if it's in the wiki (I don't have it memorized.)  I was remembering a forum thread from about a month ago that made that claim.
