More advanced Windmills
« on: June 05, 2009, 01:05:55 am »

Currently, windmills are just turbines on the ground. My suggestion is that Windmills are built like a workshop, except multiple z levels high. When it is windy, the rotors (turbines, sails, blades?) should move between z levels.

That would, indeed, be awesome.

When you say "multiple z levels high" though, isn't it already theoretically possible to build a windmill contained within a building that just happens to be more than 1 storey high? Or do you mean that the parts that make up the windmill (the main axle?)should be more than 1 z-level in height?

I'm thinking here that it would be interesting to have workshops, and then have people living over them, particularly in human settlements.

It would be nice if it got windier at higher altitudes as well, especially since high mountainsides can suffer a dearth of streams.  Also would give you a reason to put your windmills on towers.

Windmills should also occasionally turn into giants, unless they're jousted at, regularly.

As I understand it, our windmills currently look like this:

We want them to look like this:

Btw, if you're wondering, that second, smaller fan in the back powers a gear that actually turns the crown of the windmill and keeps it oriented into the wind. Nifty, eh?

I'm pretty sure that windmills already are the regular kind. They turn on the z-axis once (towards the wind?) and then stand spinning along in the breeze. The =-= -=- animation seem to indicate that you are looking down on the arms from "the side". If they had been the chinese version they would've spun continuously on the z-axis. :)

Tall is good. Although maybe Toady could come up with a way to display both vertical and horizontal windmills, visually?
