Could be worse though, For Spore Will Wright not only kept saying the same things for all his demos but he also made the same mistakes. How many times did he accidently cause a interstellar conflict?
Thats right!

We forget about spore! >:(

I finally got around to playing it, and I really don't get the hate.  Yeah, it's not what we were expecting, but it's not bad either.  The whole "Bawwww it doesn't recognize functional advantages so you can just put guns and wheels on a cube and you're good" thing is the worst.  They're not holding a gun to your head and making you do it that way.  Just have fun with it.  In case you haven't figured it out, I loved Spore, and I'm a little annoyed that I waited so long to play it, what with all the complaints.

You obviously haven't seen the earlier demo videos.

He had a whole 50 minutes gameplay video early on that showed exactly that and throughout the entire video good old Peter kept touting that very function with procedural actions and whatnot.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

I had watched them, but I'm not going to hate what we have now because it used to be different.  If it's not there, something obviously prevented them from keeping it.

EA prevented them from keeping it, to appeal to a bigger audience.

I guess I just really wanted a survival Sim.

this is the reason that freeware games are the best type, yes, they may not have the best graphics possible, or perfectly bug-less technology, but that takes a backseat to the more mportant gameplay aspect.

the commercial company that comes closest to this would have to be VALVE.

they don't compromise as much as other devs with the lawyers and crap, they make GOOD games.

indies (like Toadyone and, to an extent myself and a portion of the forum) are just better though.

I'd say indie and commercial games have a similar original/rehashed gameplay ratio. There's lots of shovelware on both sides of the fence. Except with indie games you're not out $60 when you make a bad call on what to play.

Also, for about 5 pages I've been wanting to quote the simpsons, so I'm just going to go ahead and throw this in here.

If I created an incredibly advanced AI (bear with me, here) pain would be the first thing I would teach it.

Let it know who's boss.

I would teach it love.

They already made a movie based off of that concept. Weird Science

Which after actually seeing the movie I was surprised they made it into a Childrens/Teen show when the movie was boarderline pornographic at times.

I wouldn't teach it to sex, I'd just teach it to love.
