Elona - Where to get rations? + Any tips?
« on: June 04, 2009, 09:22:34 am »

1:   How do I equip my pet or tell it do drop things?
1A: You can press "i" then push direction of pet, next click inventory then use tab to cycle between the "give" or "take" windows

2:   Is there a bank?
2A: Kitty banks are quite rare but occasionally drop, when you get one you pick it up, press "t" which is use then select the kitty bank and each time enter is pressed the amount specified by the kitty bank gets deposited into the kitty bank. I believe you have to throw the kitty bank to get deposited money out but I have yet to do this

3:   When is the best level to grind in the puppy cave to?
3A: From my experiance thus far I would say good armour and weapons are the key to doing anything, higher levels are not necessarly advantageous

4:    What are mutations?
4A:  Mutations can happen via a dream or drinking from fountains, they can be positive or negative, to see current mutations press "SHIFT F" Bad mutations are in red, good ones on blue and a random mutation gets removed via a cure mutation potion

5: What are cargos of ragdoll, inner tube etc?
5A:   These are Elonas answer to trade goods and there is a wiki page with an excellent PDF file, it may look complicated but it is not if you have the time to stick with it - http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Cargo

6: Im sick of this I cant get into the lower dungeon levels because rations are hard to come by?
6A: Do the puppy cave 'quest', diving down to the level with the puppy on it and returning it to the little boy in the nearby town. (The quest is given in Vernis)

7:   I started out okay but now the game is way to difficult?
7A: Lower you fame by intentionally failing harvest, party type quests

8:   How do I get rid of ether disease?
8A: Its better to know when to avoid it however you must attain a cure corruption potion, these can be done if you win the vast majority of blackjaack games in a casino (Beyond that I am unsure but will update the post if I find more)

9:   How do I get cure corruption potions?
9A: Well you can use your chips you get at the start the game to get them, that being said you probably dont have a high enough luck stat at the start of the game and have lost them all, if this is the case then keep digging the resource icons on the map that give you materials and sooner or later you shall recieve chips

10:  I just looted a kitty bank but its cursed! Also remove curse scrolls wont uncurse it
10A: I verified this myself and the wiki at least the way I read it isnt clear with regards to the following fact: "Scrolls of Uncurse" only uncurse equipped items so you must get a vanish curse scroll. If you are new though it will be unlikely you have access to those so what you want to do is keep all the "Blessed" scrolls of uncurse, I just verified that this uncursed a 500k kitty bank, so something worth bearing in mind!

11:   What is the differance between mutations and etherwind?
11A:
Quote
Mutations and Ether wind disease mutations are similar things, with one fundamental difference.
Mutations tend to have a beneficial and a negative version of each other, that you cannot have both of at the same time. If you have a strength boosting mutation you can't have a weakness inducing one for example. Cure mutation potions cure these.
Ether wind disease ones on the other hand tend to have mostly negative effects with the occasional semi-positive effect also included, such as the wings mutation making you hover, but stopping you using a cloak. If you get 20 Etherwind disease mutations, you die, if i recall correctly. Cure corruption potions cure these.

12: Which starting pet should I get?
12A: The answer to this may change and this is just an opinion but I would say get the little girl, Another thing I have done is I accidently bought a horse with no riding skill, useless one may think? However it was level 10 and its actually a very powerful pet when you start out, in fact next game I start I shall get one straight away.

13:  What is the best in game assets to purchase in the initial instance?
13A: The general consesus seems to be getting a Museum, so dont sell those moster cards you loot!

14:   I am out of storage space and I am still very low level with little money! What should I do?
14A: Don't dump stuff in town but rather goto Vernis and clear out the rogues den near the graveyard there after you have recieved the quest and you can dump hordes of stuff there.

----------------------------Question 15 to do -----------------------
15:  I am past level 10 but sometimes mages and other magic mobs damage tear through my armour what do I do?
15A: Watch this space :) This is where I am at, I am thinking get named gear by trading with other famed adventurer NPCs however ideally I think you want full fire, cold , darkness and mind armour sets , I need some more information on how to know what damage types various spells are causing.
----------------------------End Q 15 ---------------------------------

16:   What skills should I look to get?
16A: First choose a relevant couple of roles you want your character to play, I saw so many good skills that I have spread myself to thin and infact what skills to get is debatable however negotiation is vital, this should be one of the first skills you should get as it means you can buy things fo a much lower price and sell high. Weight lifting is another great skill worth getting early. Lockpicking is also recommended. If you plan on buying a ranch later gene engineering is worth getting; I did this however I believe you are better getting that skill free after doing a quest to capture X amount of monsters in a monster ball

17: How do I use a monster ball?
17A: You have to choose a mob that is the same or lower level of that specified on the monster ball, hit that mob until it has a tiny bit of health left, press "SHIFT & T" and select the monster ball, this will throw the ball and capture the monster inside.

18:   I have chosen a god, where can I worship him and what do I do?
18A: There is a place a bit north of the tax place in which all the gods altars are situated; go there and make sure to choose your gods altar, next click "SHIFT & O" after which the offer window shall appear showing any corpses you have which are not in your cooler box, however the following quote explains well how to use corpses:

Quote
You can offer rotten corpses to your god but the wiki says that gives you 1 favor per corpse. If you offer non rotted corpse you get 1 favor per each stone the corpse weighs. So if you find a really heavy corpse put it in your cooler box from puppy quest, and let one of your pets carry it so you're not burdened.

19:   How do I use the teleport wand?
19A: Click "SHIFT & Z" to access the Zap menu, next select then hit enter on the wand of teleport, when it asks for a direction note this is not the direction to teleport but rather the person to teleport hence you must press numpad 5 on the keyboard to select yourself. (Note this will teleport you randomly)

20:   What in game usage does eggs and milk have?
20A: These are simply food and drink items respectively.

21:   Some mobs are very tough and certain magic damage rocks me! What can I do?
21A: I shall update this answer as I find this tricky also but currently I am looking to get specialised armour sets, my aim is to get say for example amour with all luck buffs for the casino as well as getting armour with all fire buffs for fire mobs. As for knowing where to find such armour? I am unsure and looking to find out, thus far I like the feeling of not knowing that X item will drop on the 5th attempt etc

22:  I keep getting killed when playing music! What can I do?
22A: You can look for items that improve your music and although I have only touched on this area I have found playing in front of my pets who are a significantly lower level than me to help alot. I was also lucky enough to find some strange artifact lute lying in Lumiest! It seems likesomething had killed an npc which dropped the lute.

23:   What! I am a male/female and I am pregnant??
23A: At a low level this could be bad! To get rid of the pregnancy dink poision, if you don't do this then in a short time an alien will burst from you stomach. When an alien is out if they arent killed fast theres a high chance them/their spores whatever they are called go into other npcs stomachs, most likely you will think everything is okay but when you come back the whole town will be swarming with them. Aliens give me the damn creeps but I was curious where it would all go and so palmia is now infested, watch this space! All said I think this is a very very cool and original feature so I hope the elona people keep working theirr magic on the English version of the game. (N.B think before creating an infestation because its damn near impossible to control and aliens appear at the most inconvenient momments!)

24: When I look at equipment I see numbers with certain bracket types amongst other information, what does all this mean?
24A:   As an example we have: [A,B] A = DV & B = PV yeah. (X,Y) X = hit bonus & Y = damage bonus. Square brackets pertain to defense, normal "()" brackets pertain to damage related information. In the above example [A,B] = defense value, protection value respectively whilst (X,Y) = hit bonus and damage bonus, also respectively. Further more you may see the following on armour, weapons: "It maintains Strength" , this means that you strength does not get affected by various sickness and/or debuffs

25:  How do I marry someone? What does the menu item "Incarnate an Adventurer do?
25A:   To marry someone you need to get your reputation with them high enough so it reads as "soulmate" after which you can talk to them and select the "Ask for hand" option. Reputation can get higher by making sure your pet does not die and letting them get the killing blows when fighting mobs, this can take a long time and the preferred way is to give them lots of engagement rings or engagement amulets. Don't make the mistake I did, for example make sure you identify all your engagement attire since without identification the items won't stack and considering the amount of rings etc needed you will need all the inventory space available since taking an engagement item from a pet results in a significant reputation drop as well as them eating the ring/amulet in question!

Another way to do the above is to use a love potion, what you do is <SHIFT & B> to get to the "Mix" menu, next select the love potion then a destination food , this mixes the potion in the food creating an aphrodisiac which you then give to the person you want to marry, my own observations which I need to verify were that it boosts reputation and that the target pet may lay an egg

Assuming you are now married, what you can do now is wait until you see on the UI that you are sleepy then talk to your ingame wife/husband and select "Do you want to make a gene" (<--may not be exact term) This creates a gene and then if you save your game, restart elona and at the main menu select "Incarnate" related option you should see a new adventurer which I believe gets some bonuses as well as being able to use some items from you main character if they get a deed of heirship

N.B Just working on this all very slowly as I enjoy the game but thanks to everyone who has given feedback, since without that I would have managed to write the above as it has been and still is a learning process for me and since I had so many questions I thought, why not write it down? (That way when come back to foum after say a few week break I haven't fogotten it all :D )

I vaguely recall saying to you last time that the Elona thread itself would be a better place for you to ask such questions, but, god knows when that was. anyway, speaking of questions, i'll do my best to answer them, though i've not played Elona lately.

On Dungeons & Food, The best way for you to deal with the food issue with dungeons, is to do the puppy cave 'quest', diving down to the level with the puppy on it and returning it to the little boy in the nearby town. The reward for that is a cooler box, that prevents any food in it from rotting, meaning that you can easily put food in it such as cooked meals or pasta or whatever you get in town, allowing you to do dungeon dives without fear of starving to death.
Granted, the cooler box only contains four items, though i believe you can have four stacks of items, if they're things that stack.
Typically, I'll eat the travellers cargo food before diving into a dungeon, just as added insurance.

On Banks, There's cat statue bank things. You can find them for sale sometimes, or find them while diving in the puppy cave rarely. The number on them is how much money you deposite each time, though to get it out, you have to throw the bank to break it.

With your pet, when you interact with them and get the menu that allows you to give them things, tap Tab, and you should swap to their inventory view, this should allow you to take away anything that they're carrying or wearing for the most part, and thus reduce the weight they're carrying.

Part of not being 'squishy' for me was getting a suit of high DV/PV armour, allowing me to avoid most attacks and take little damage from others, it takes time to find such armour of course, so until then you can always buy slaves in Derphy to act as additional meat shields and protect you - you can have one per per 5 charisma.
As for the heavy armour issue, if you can get your hands on material change scrolls, you can always try and change your armour into lighter materials, thus allowing you to lower your armour's encumberance and thus your spell failure rate by a degree.

As for quests, You can fail party/harvesting quests for fame loss, and simply do any other that you believe you can complete. Escorting poisoned people gives a good chunk of money, but you have to be careful with that one due to the shorter time limit.

A museum, if you get the cards and statues for it, is a better early investment than a store. I'd wait until you have a collection of different and interesting statues to put in it though, so it can instantly start to make money back for you. A store would be useful later on though, allowing you to sell items of value and make a little more profit, but, that's something you can worry about when you're confident you're really finding a lot of good stuff.

Blessed/Cursed scrolls and potions tend to be either better or worse effects than the regular versions of the same name, though a few backfire when cursed, such as cursed scrolls of escape imprisoning you (I believe.), though on the other end of the scale, a blessed scroll of cure corruption will remove more etherwind disease mutations from you.

Horses/Mounts/Riding pets requires the riding skill, it's only really useful situationally, so i wouldn't worry about it personally, though it's a skill you activate via the same button as casting a spell, only with shift held down, i believe - that is, once you purchase the skill. Of course, you have to have the thing in question as a pet, before you can ride it.

The interact/teach option is for making your pet 'speak' randomly when you're walking around - aka, annoying the hell out of you. Your pet's going to walk around occasionally saying "Magic Arrow" now, after you taught them to say that.

With your platinum coins, personally i'd buy lockpicking if you haven't already got it, as even doors you struggle to open train it, meaning that it trains with play, allowing you eventually to pick high level chests.

Hope this is of some help to you, and of course, if i'm wrong on anything, i'm sure someone'll give the correct information.

Alright this post is WAY too long for me to read at this time:

Tips based off your questions:
1) As soon as you can get Negotiation with your Platnum. Without it you cannot sell things for reasonable prices and services (such as identification) have outrageous prices.
2) Bread and Flour never rot though it is out of the price range of someone who just started. It is the best item you can buy for inside dungeons.
3) While in town you can eat anything on the ground even if you don't own it. This includes any furnature made out of food.
4) The usefulness of Riding depends on your race. Ones who are fast normally don't generally need it. Slow ones such as Golems find it invaluable!
-Don't underestimate riding. With Riding you can effectively raise your speed to well over 100 without dedicating equipment to speed. Best of all while riding some status effects are absorbed by the mount effectively being made harmless (Curse and Slow for example)
--Tip related: Genetically modify your horse so it can hold more equipment.
5) Don't sell extremely valuable equipment. Save it at your home for trading with adventurers. Note that an objects worth often denies their price. You will find cheap amazing items and expensive useless items.
6) Objects that stack and that are worth a lot are useful for trading with other adventurers. While a godly weapon usually has a static value, a stack can only get larger. WARNING: When trading a stack it trades the WHOLE stack. Make sure you can get the item for less of the stack before you trade the whole thing.
7) Once available hire a maid. They give you opportunities!
8) Procrastinate! Believe it or not the longer you play without leveling up the better as your attributes

Id type more but this computer does this weird thing on this site.

Thanks! that helps alot, btw I found a miracle light shield but when I try to identify it says I must investigate so Im hanging onto that, hoping its good :)

I got owned so bad in this game but with a warmage Im doing alot better , I just got the remove curse spell but I have no where near the mana however Im curious as to what skills I need to train to get my mana higher, first thing Im doing though its going to that rouge town and seeing if theres a lockpick trainer there, I have 10 plat coins atm so hopefully thats enough

I also go a quest to capture 5 rats in a monster ball but I assume that you can catch any low level mob?

Thanks for this help :) I did have an old elona thread thats right, not meaning to be a fool either by not posting in the 90 odd page elona thread its just it veres on topic to off topic and vica versa so its getting very hard to find stuff, still I accept its bad practice and if a mod moves this onto the end of the main thread thats fine as maybe all the questions on a single topic will help others.

Im unsure whether to go for lockpicking first then for the dog in the puppy cave or wait, Im away to see if the wiki has the trainer listed

Thanks :)

.......

Just noticed a second useful reply, huge thanks, in relation to armour I found some blessed light mail for a great price and was much better than the heavy stuff I was wearing so I see your point. Will get training negotiation also

Yeah you will really notice a difference with Negotiation under your belt once it levels up a little.

Hiya, starting to make a little profit now because of negotiation and having Identified alot of the stuff but I am aiming to ID everything is this what you folks usually do?

also I am level 8 or 9 and I still struggle in certain situations in the puppy cave so do you think this is normal for my character? I am unsure whether to reroll since I only have 5 charisma and negotiation is a charisma based skill

edit:

STR 11 (11)
CON 22 (22)
DEX 13 (10) <why is it brackets 10?
PER 15 (10)
LER 10 (10)
WIL 8  (8)
MAG 14 (14)
CHAR 4 (4)

LIFE 110(110)
MANA 90(90)
Sanity 0
Speed 73(70)

Melee1 4d3+1 * 0.9
Melee2 4d3+1 * 0.8
Dist   2d12+3* 0.9
Prot 27% + 1d11 <not sure of all this stuff, I have a rough idea of how the dice work but not other stuff

Cargo WT = 24.0
Cargo LMT = 80.0
Equip WT = 24.1

When I do a reroll what levels should I have stats at for a good caster warmage thats also tough as nails in melee and can get good prices on stuff and read good book? for example I will put more thought into charisma this time, also in relation to gods I could have worshipped at the wind gods altar but I thought the abilities offered werent exactly mage like so I am looking for a morre destructive god, or should I have taken the wind god? Its just I wasnt sure on the penaltys of worshiping 2 gods

Another thing, say I have a shield thats like [-2,-1]

are minus values bad?

forr example whats the differance

[-2 -1] Armour compared to:   [2 1] which is best and why?

I am highly enjoying this game and plan to be on it a while which is why I am asking these questions and i has a secondary effect of helping others, since its all question answer on a single page, once I have things answered I will edit my top post so its all

Yeah... Elona really rewards players who id-ed everything.

Since id-ed items get MAJOR VALUE !!BOOST!! or something like that.

Anyway, my fairy pianist is always overweight, can't equip ANY items (the game said it's too heavy), and always got killed when playing near townfolks. Help?

I havent went any musician character yet so this may be waaay off but just thinking doesnt a fairy have a bad str stat? In which case that would explain you struggling weight wise?

I actually just rerolled a much more balanced character, hes a warrior but has high magic so going to try this out also just found a doomed arrow so Im away to check out what that means

The performance thing is a NEWBIE DEATH TRAP.

In the starting town there's a high level NPC that absolutely hate music. He is very very difficult to satisfy... and when you cannot, he throws stuff at you. Because he's so much stronger than you, you will die from it.

You need to practice in other places... like in the wilderness, with monsters nearby killed and only your pets (who must be lower level than you) are around.

Elona Wiki suggests to play only to lower level pets until your Performer skill is rank 8. And then still you must check your audience's strength - when they are twice as strong as you they are very likely to hate your performance.

Ah... yeah...
God damn, I better off being a Yerles Warmage using Artifact Laser guns. And ☼spells☼ of course.

Also, farmer + the god who give you seed for rotting foods = $$

Weight Lifting is an amazing skill, it has a greater effect on what you can carry then Strenght and Constitution combined. So Fairy would have a tough time in the early game lifting objects but it would get better as time goes on if you train it. The REAL difficulty of playing the Fairy in my mind would be the weight requirement of their equipment for bonuses.

Doomed is the same as Cursed. Don't use them!

Ok :) btw just starting to make  a little headway with this new char, I managed to get married now pretty soon I want to be able to have kids so that way you can incarnate an adventurer if someone dies or something? I saw discussion about this on these forums months back but didnt pay much attention since at the time I was no where near that, also found a 1k and 500k kitty bank :) so you do use kitty bank and it only works when I get exact amount + after I retieve from the bank does he bank get destroyed?

in relation to kids I need to find a trainer that sells gene manipulation skill? Then what? (Do I have this more or less right?)

Thanks again! Been having a total blast so just posted when managed to peel myself away :) - I have done some major inventory  management and to anyone who is struggling as I was, well fully identifying everything and playing the slow game is the way to go , for  example I was struggling at a certain level, so I bought new chest armour, heres the thing the stats didnt seem that much different except one was light scale or something but the differance is huge, the magic mana is hardly any but the melee is getting decent

cheers!

Nope, not in the same game. Your marriage will produce a gene, not a child... then when you start a new game, you can choose that gene. The new character will have some bonus, as well as inheriting items from the parents. That will not affect your parent character's save.

Only items without the "precious" property can be inherited, and you still need to purchase/find a deed with your new character in order to claim the items.

so you do use kitty bank and it only works when I get exact amount + after I retieve from the bank does he bank get destroyed?

Yup, the only way to get money out is to throw the kitty bank. Make sure you throw it downwards, at your own feet - you don't want your pets or anyone picking up your life savings. ;)

Also, kitty banks get heavier each time you use it. So the ones with a higher value are more useful for long term savings.

in relation to kids I need to find a trainer that sells gene manipulation skill? Then what? (Do I have this more or less right?)

Gene engineering is for modifying your pets only. You can get that in that town all the way to the west, the one with a dock. (I haven't played for so long I forgot its name)

There's a quest there you can do, to get a free gene machine (heavy!). Sometimes you can find one in dungeon as random furniture.

playing the slow game is the way to go

The game scales with your character level and your fame. The more fame you have, the more you can earn but more dangerous it will be.

There's a service NPC in town that can help you locate NPC adventurers... he/she will give you a list about NPC adventurer's level and fame. Compare theirs with yours... don't have too much fame for your level. With good equipments and pets you can easily survive twice as much fame as you should have though.

You can deliberately fail quests that have no time limit to lower your fame without losing karma. Party quest and farm gathering quest are two of those.

I think how often you get mugged on world map depends on how much cargo you carry... I couldn't resist spoilers in Elona wiki but I've noticed it myself that carrying alot Cargos of Food results in more rogues trying to rob you

Also if you have good charisma you'll get some nice extra bucks from prostitution  ::) Anyone else noticed that max amount of cash you can get by sleeping with NPCs is roughly 100gp * CHA?

My tip: If you want to slow down Ether disease considerably you should look out for a portable shelter from general vendor NPCs. It's heavy (weighs 12.5s) but well worth the trouble if you can carry it. When Etherwind starts to blow -> use (= construct) shelter anywhere -> enter shelter and wait until Etherwind is gone. Ether disease can give you nice bonuses too but usually with a heavy price (example: Heavy carapace +PV but -DV).

Really appreciate these responses, I have been keeping my fame down as suggested.

Talking about deeds, obviously a deed of museum is for a museum but there is other ones, I think I may have an idea what deed is needed for the incarnate adventurer but cant quite remember the name :) (Actually when I goto incarnate adventurer it says no game files)

So I need to generate a standard adventurer, go get some deed then what? (Away to check wiki :) - actually I appreciate you trying to keep it spoiler free, I think I know whats needed now, anyone that needs to know alot about pets check http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Ally )

All being said though if I incarnate a new character when the parent character is at a higher level well does higher level = bigger bonuses? Either way its a very cool feature.

Im away to do the suggested compare fame thing on the adventurer list, that could be a mistake Im making by getting to much then.
I need to goto derphy and get slaves though I think :)
