Temples of the People - experimental community fortress
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:49:04 pm »

Okay, so I'm currently making a human fort, and I want to build a bunch of temples for them. This means that I will need some gods. Anyway, instead of making temples for the existing gods, everyone makes their own god/demigod/saint/etc, complete with a name, patron of [profession], and some preferences. I will do my best to build a temple (not huge, no bigger than... 9x9, 10x10, somewhere around there with no more than 3 z-levels and a roof) to your specifications. If no preferred building material is available, I will put the temple on hold until something suitable arrives.

Try to make your description as much like the description screen in legends/unit menu, but add some things like preferences.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Gods:

Zas the Free Lord is often depicted as a male skeletal human and associated with death, festivals, sky, and music. His preferred colours are sky blue and white. He likes stringed instruments, microcline, and skull totems. He does not demand sacrifices. He is the patron god of bone and wood carvers.
-He has a temple. Temple plans: somewhat octagonal area with a microcline statue in the middle with white stone floors. A roof made of white stone is supported by microcline supports.

Kolok the Friendly Anger is often depicted as a skeletal whale and associated with fire, undeath, oceans, and Rubidium. His preferred colours are yellow and orange. He likes Scepters, Rubies, and Engravings. He demands sacrifices. He is the patron of philosophers.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: slightly whale-shaped temple made of white and yellow stone.

Ousire the Many Gears is often depicted as a grinning male dwarf and is associated with gears, mechanics, engineers, and awesome machines. His preferred colors are golden yellow and bronze. He likes machines, windmills, waterwheels, and screw pumps. He demands sacrifices. He is the patron saint of mechanics.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans:
Quote
make the temple out of bronze, cover the roof with as many windmills as possible, and if possible, divert a river some for waterwheels. the doors should all be retractable floodgates opened by levers. if possible, make axels and stuff running all up and down the walls, and have them under the floor. make the floor glass so people can see them spin.

oh, and there needs to be a pit of doom, covered with grates/floodgates/whatever. station people on it, and pull a lever to sink em in for sacrifices!
Yeah, too awesome (and confusing) to rewrite. I expect this temple to take forever to complete.

Hexed the Angry Blueness is often depicted as a male human and is associated with water, war, fishing and spears. His preferred colours are Blue and Green. He is the patron god of fishers and spearmen. He demands sacrifices of raw fish.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: made of microcline with a pool of fish in the middle.

Kat is often depicted as a grey cat and associated with animals, life (especially cats), pregnancy, and fire (Nuclear catsplosions). Its preferred colors are red and grey, and it prefers cats for their aloofness and bauxite for being red. It is the patron god of animal caretakers and cats (obviously). It demands sacrifices of vermin.
-It has no need of a temple, however, if a cat dies, one citizen must be sacrificed.

Lanternobey The Metal Hound of the Gods is often depicted as a massive dwarven war dog, it's body made of all forms of metal, and is associated with loyalty, protection, the community, dogs, and war. Prefers any metal, but prefers the martial material be put to better use. Demands sacrifice, but any death in protection of the community is acceptable.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: small metal d's and/or kennels anywhere Lanternobey's blessing is required. Every war dog that dies must be accompanied by someone.

Lord Brick is often depicted as a male dwarven mechanin.  His preferred colors are green, red, yellow, and blue. He is the patron hero of LEGO, deity of architects (and mechanics?), who is often depicted as a pile of blocks and is commonly associated with blocks, buildings, and mechanisms.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: 1st floor=red, 2nd=blue, 3rd=yellow, roof=green. Matching coloured gear assemblies on each floor.

Labs the Angry Waves is often depicted as a male carp and associated with rivers, oceans, and fishing. Labs demands live creatures to serve as slaves from the deep.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: mini-moat and drawbridge. Fish in the moat. Constructed only from stone that has touched water.

Damok the Darkness of Emptiness takes the form of a male human silhouette. Damok is often associated with darkness, the night, and the void. Damok requires no sacrfices.
-He does not yet have a temple. Temple plans: a temple around a deep pit, made to look as if it was sealed and broken into by mining.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: June 2
Awesome, I got a god before I even have the fort area set up.
Also, new addition, pick some sort of profession that you are the patron god (or saint) of. This also means that you can have a saint/minor god/demigod/hero/etc. if you wish.

The Temple:

Just a one or two z-level area semi-shaped like a whale in white and yellow.

Okay, now to outline the site.

We have a nice chasm on the east side of the map.
There's a brook on the west side.
Plenty of stone (at first glance it's mostly marble and microcline with an exterior siltstone).
Enough trees.
Some decent spots to begin my outdoor farming (before I dig a farm pit that is).
A good wall in the middle to start digging.
No magma unfortunately. All the sites with magma sucked.

Make the temple out of microcline with a pool of fishies in it. :)

I shall be Kat, patron god depicted as a grey cat and associated with animals, life (especially cats), pregnancy, and fire (Nuclear catsplosions). It's prefered colors are red and grey, and it prefers cats for their aloofness and bauxite for being red. It is the patron god of animal caretakers and cats (obviously). There will be no temple, but while I am worshipped, no cats may be killed, weither on purpose or accident. Should a cat die, a dwarf must die in return. Regardless of who killed the cat.

That'll be pretty tough... my cats always explode. Poor haulers/soapmakers/other usless guys.

The kitty problem is easy enough. Cram the female one into a cage when you first get there. Should the male one die, you release one of the kittens from the cage (Cause ten seconds in and that cat is knocked up) and continue.

Lanternobey: The Metal Hound of the Gods. Depicted as a massive dwarven war dog, it's body made of all forms of metal, and is associated with loyalty, protection, the community, dogs, and war. Prefers any metal, but prefers the martial material be put to better use. Demands sacrifice, but any death in protection of the community is acceptable.

Temple: A couple smallish ones. Just put metal dogs on the ground in places like the barracks, kennels, and where ever you desire the blessing of Lanternobey. (Just multi metal d's here and there) Plus, any named war dog that dies, must be accompanied by a dwarf. Since war dogs die fighting, I am sure this won't be too hard to keep up.

Lord Brick is often depicted as a male dwarven mechanic.  His preferred colors are green, red, yellow, and blue.  He is the patron hero of LEGO, deity of architects (and mechanics?), who is often depicted as a pile of blocks and is commonly associated with blocks, buildings, and mechanisms.

Temple must be as thus:  1st floor=red, 2nd=blue, 3rd=yellow, roof=green.  Gear assemblies on each floor of matching colors.  That is all

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

When I said explode, I meant in the literal sense.

Also, is Lord Brick depicted as a pile of blocks or a male dwarven mechanic?

His deity is the pile of bricks, but Lord Brick is the patron hero depicted as a male dwarven mechanic.

Neat idea, by the way.

Mythology:

Zas the Free Lord:

When humans were first created, they were slaves to the gods. They lived amongst the gods and fulfilled their wishes. However, one of the gods did not like this. He wanted to free the humans. His name was Zas. At the time, he was a young god, of the fourth generation.

Zas was very friendly with the humans. He would talk to them and show them the magic of the gods. He gave them names and taught some of them how to read and write. He would also bring them food and drink out of his own rations.

One day, after seeing some of the humans he befriended mistreated by his father, Zas jumped forward and attacked his father, killing him. Once he had gotten the taste of blood, he continued to fight his kin, creating a distraction which the humans used to escape. Zas was killed in the process, but came back to life, his skin crumbling away from his body. He grabbed some of his magic and jumped up into the sky. It was here that he played a skeletal tune on his instrument that the whole world could hear. This tune sealed away all the magic of his home, leaving only that he took with him.

Zas promptly descended to the humans and helped them build a great city. After the city was built, he gave his magic to the humans. The magic of fire, mortality, music, and knowledge. There was one building in the city that was built by Zas with no help from the humans. This building was a temple, a temple to himself. On the pillars he wrote:

"Do not worship me as a god, but as a friend and equal."

awsome good, confusing bad. should i dumb it down some? really, the doors, the pit, and the windmills (and/or whaterwheels) are the key parts. be sure to use the power it makes for good use! Ousire of the many gears would be angered if the power of his temple wasnt used to run any traps, mills, floodgates, ect. (feel free to have the axels and such spin out of the walls at weird angles to power things. weird looking = cool and steampunky!)

It's not too confusing to understand, just too confusing to rewrite.
It's going to be the craziest temple for sure.
I have a feeling 11x11 will only barely be sufficient.
