I just recalled this situation in particular because I had to use this method once when a snakeman tribe near my fortress (all in caves) kept picking off my fisherdwarves.  I had thought it was pretty funny to imagine all the other cave dwellers who knew or were friends with any of the snakemen to realize that the snakemen were suddenly all gone completely, and in their place was only a minimalistic monument to dwarven superiority.
