Flameproof Goblins
« on: May 31, 2009, 07:01:22 am »

I put three Fire Imps in my arena thinking I'd have some fun with them.

Turns out they won't attack goblins.  I even tossed some of my pets in there to get the imps to breathe fire.  The goblins were getting covered in flames and didn't even have a scratch on them.

Is there a way to get the imps to light the goblins on fire (short of dumping magma in the pit)?

There's a not-quite-recent thread that covered this somewhere.

Do you have temperature on?

I do have temperature on as the imps caused one of my dwarfs to explode after lighting it (can't remember the gender) on fire.

I guess I'll just have to start tossing all my bred wolves in there to take care of the loose goblins.

Herm. Well then. From my recollections of adventure mode where I likely had temperature off, dragon fire, and probably by extension, imp fire, can be blocked with a shield. Do the goblins still have their equipment?

In any case, if you want flaming goblins, I recommend using magma to ignite pieces of charcoal, and creatively leading goblins to it, or using the flaming charcoal to set grass outside on fire and burning the goblins away in an enclosed field. Far more reliable than fire imps.

Or use *multiple* dragons. My current world has around seven of the things, so that's what I would recommend if you are so fortunate.

My dwarf blocked dragon fire with a wooden shield.  Awesome.

He did kinda burn and die though.

I've only had a titan so far.  I threw it into the arena too when I had maybe 30 war dogs and a black bear in it.

It killed a lot of the dogs but it eventually over-exerted and was slowly torn into chunks.

You have to admit, those "megabeasts" really show the dreary realism in this game. No matter how supernaturally strong and sturdy you are, you still die in the most pathetic of circumstances... :(

I actually had a mega beast die a pretty epic death during a human siege. Despite missing his tail, a dragon single handedly hunted down and slaughtered tree or four squads of mounted warriors-despite periodically loosing consciousness since his tail had been torn off in world gen. It took a whole squad of mounted archers to bring him down-and if they hadn't been mounted, I bet he would have won. Or, even more so, if he hadn't passed out while chasing them due to an injury sustained over 100 years before.

That's pretty awesome! Did the dragon light the horses on fire, or pick up men and throw them from their mounts? Did you record this?

Unfortunately, no. I can, however, replicate it-and record (it's l, correct?). I had a facepalm afterward when I realized I should have recorded. Well, I did savescum, so it might even be that the same dragon will revisit in the middle of a siege. And while it breathed fire, temp was off (tried to improve framerate in a previous fort, never bothered to reset it to on) so it basically ended up chasing them down and killing them with the claws or mouth. Was pretty impressive, though, and I *will* reenact this.

You will end up with a titan or a hydra or something.  Hopefully a BC. Those will destroy!
