How many moving DF ships have you seen before? Ports? Docks?

I say we chop down a lot of trees to make a boat. Have some peasants gather rope reed  and make a giant sail.

There will be ships. Hell, there might even be whole sea-faring nations!

Merpeople?  We need to expand our base here people, contact different cultures. I agree, Desert calvary is a very good idea.  But not as good as getting the mermaids on our side.  First, though, we need something to give to whomever we go to.

I was going to go with the very fair, beautiful kind that lure sailors to their deaths, either by drowning or death by large rocks.
In the end, it's up to Emp. Jonny.

Maybe we should forsake land entirely, and go into the depths of the ocean... find Rapture and settle in nicely, to worship the Old Ones in the deep darkness.

My gods people.
Get it into your heads.
MEREPEOPLE = NOT AWESOME. NOT USEFUL. YES LAME

They are usually confined to the sea, and whenever they can go on land they are very weak humans at best, usually being crippled!
There may be nations in the sea with which we may want to deal- but think about this- the land can always attack the sea (boats), but not vice-versa.
And currently our enemies are on land.
Our enemies sea-based operations are the following:
  • inter-human trading.

With an army of merepeople, we could indeed- easily- prevent this from going on. Woop woop. Apparantely the land transport is good enough it takes a few days to raise an interspecies army- they can deal with no sea trade for a while.
An army of merepeople might- might- be suitable for attacking coastal cities. It would be very difficult- even if the enemy has no walls between the harbour and the main city, unless the humans are venetians, capturing the city will require going over land. Mermaids on land= not cool. In the best possible situation (barring venice), with a city with no walls, right up on the shore, we would need at least double the garrison in order to over power using mermaids. And by garrison I also mean peasants with pitchforks, because, hey, they could defeat land-bound mermaids if they try.
And then we would need a large garrison, because guess what? People don't like strange people! They will deal with them, but if you try to rule over humans with mermaids, you will get resentment!

ALSO: Mermaids are usually not barbarians.

Wereas desert cavalry- oh, desert cavalry! I could go on for hours and hours!
I am super, super cereal when I say if we pick mermaids instead of desert cavalry there had better be a very good deus ex machina why the mermaids are super awesome. And even then I shall moan endlessly about how it makes no sense.

ALSO: Mermaids are usually not barbarians.
Armok describes these people as barbarians from the perspective of the coalition. There could be any number of races that would be under that barbarian category.

Including Merpeople.

You're also ruling out, with all possibility, of a mixed race civilisation.

Obviously they would be useful.

But getting them would be a logistic nightmare.

You're trying to find a nomadic people in a desert you don't know the size of, with only a week or two of preparation, and with no pack animals and only a few Dwarves.

No.

I would also like to point out that desert cavalry are trained to fight in the desert. While they will most definitely be useful outside it, they won't prove just as effective as they seem to be.

On that note, i think we should scrap both the idea of the desert cavalry and the merpeople, and instead seek out a human/dwarf/elf (sadly, we are gonna need them against the coalition.)/goblin town and hope they're not a part of the coalition.

Wow, there are more than one race of barbarian? That makes three so far in my count (supposed desert cavalry, mermen in the sea, murloks on the coast). Besides, all we truly need is some place we can fortify in (the cave suitable for the God of Caves) and then send out representatives to gather our strength. Its so simple, dunderheads.
