Laugh at the Colossus, and draw your axe. Throw your staff at it (or stick, whatever) and charge! Charge right past it! While charging, examine the engraving as it may be a clue.

Examine it anyways, because clearly there should be one showing the solution to the boss fight.  If not... hmm... might want to look for weak points in stance, grasp, and nervous areas of the colossus.
