Do you actually need to strike the river (and flood somewhere) or just find it?  I've found an underground damp wall, but no random towercaps yet.

You need to get the message: ''You have struck an underground river'' or whatever it is. AFAIK, anyway - I don't bother with towercap farming.

Nah, just got the "damp stone" message.  I think I'll check it out...

Probably just an aquifer. Careful while "checking it out". Heh.

Would be odd, since I have no sand on this map, and I've dug four z levels down without finding an aquifer.

If I had to take a blind guess, you either haven't found your underground river, or you used Reveal, which corrupts that feature (along with several others.)

If not those, then you should dlete and reload DF, 'cause that ain't s'posed t' happen.

Oh, I should add - if you want to muddy stone for a towercap farm - the water can come from anywhere. You can use brook water and the tiles will still grow towercaps - the water doesn't have to come from the underground river.

Is the muddied stone underground? Towercaps and underground shrubs will only grow on subterrean tiles. Also, make sure the stone is still muddy, smoothing or engraving the stone removes the mud(though you can remuddy the stone).

Does biome matter at all? What about weather conditions like temperature? What about magma, does this have any effect?

I'm pretty sure that damp stone is damp stone until you mine into it and get the message.
