Firing and hitting stuff

I keep hearing that ranged is the best adventurer class to play as, as it's insanely overpowered. My problem is though, I can fire at a target a hundred times and each time I would miss. When I'm being ambushed however, I can hit things pretty well. What's up with that?

Do I have to slap them in the face, run a few hundred yards away and then fire?

Yes. Yes you do.  Or you could smack them in the face, then shoot them, because they went flying.

I'm presuming if I slap+shoot one elf I'll be able to shoot all the surrounding elves without a slap?

Yes, slap a child or something harmless though. Otherwise your upper body may be smashed in.

Went back to playing wrestler. Choked a horse to death then threw it at a child. Beats arrows and bolts any day if you ask me.

My personal favourite is breaking the legs of an elf near a tree or pinning him/her to a tree with a spear and then setting fire to it and watching them BURN.

It's not the ONLY DF sport... What about elf curling?(Launching one elf into another at high speed) That's great fun. Especially with Elf children they seem to fly further.
