Status: Came home from work. Set up server with basic admin controls. I used my own server to cheap unlock a bunch of achievements the cheating way. Now I need another people to connect to try it out.

Only problem is, even though my server is "online" because of how my wireless network works I have to configure it to allow you guys to search out the server through steam and connect. Curse you dynamic IP!

So yeah, it's online, connected to steam, and works (I can connect) but I need to forward ports and reconfigure my network to allow others to connect.

Also, my bandwidth is not an issue, leaving the computer on 24/7 might be eventually but that depends on how much electricity bill I'm burning up :P

Anyone have any knowledge on how to open ports without compromising my network security? Which is admittedly decent, but not high.

Airlink101 AR670W, a cheapo wireless N/B/G router I got for $15, but hey, wireless N for $15  :P

I'm sure it's an issue with port forwarding and my network security, but I've never had it before... then again this is the first time I've tried a Steam server.

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Airlink+/Airlink101-AR504/default.htm

Should probably be something like this. There isn't a guide for your specific router, but for Airlink's in general, this probably fits.

Also, the port you want to open should be port 27015.

On the topic of hiring a server, this company looks fairly good. 37p per slot, and they have tech support and pretty much most stuff we'd need to host a server.

Whatdya think?

P.s its a uk server, but that means americans will get pings of about 100 or something. Check the test ping server they have listed (for american folks) and tell me if thats an ok ping to play with.

P.p.s i can get good games on american servers with 150 ping, 200 i'd say is max before people start complaining.

Psst. You didn't tell us who the company is, so we can't check anything. ;)

I vote for a British server. It gives good pings to everyone. By good, I mean under 130.

If people are willing to split the cost, then I can help pay. So long as it isn't way overboard anyway. I did vote no though, and my opinion still stands.

Not everyone. But that's to be expected with DFC being so diverse.

As someone who wouldn't be paying feel free to ignore my opinion but I fully support a British server being a Brit myself.

As far as I know, Kael still needs to configure his router for the server, but the server itself is ready to go.

Yeah, I cant thank Kael enough for trying to save me/us money. But like he said he cant have it running 24/7 and I'm not entirely sure about his bandwidth costs, electricity costs etc. etc. So I do kinda want to get a proper server, and these guys seems to have a great service. 37p for a slot isn't much at all, with all those benifits? I think its a great deal.

It'll cost around £7.40 for a 20 person server. That sounds reasonable, that comes to £1.48 ($2.36(lol at exchange rates)) a month for those who wish to pay.
