Town leaders a bit overpowered?
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:46:25 pm »

I tried to attack a town spearmaster with legend+12 wrestling, sneaking up on, perfectly agile, might, and superhumanly tough, I missed the first shot, he saw me, threw me off the balcony (that one-tile thin walkway on second floor of the barracks) jumped on top of me stabbed me with a spear, my 6 goblin followers then killed him and I bled to death......

was that just bad luck or are they really that good?

Of course, why else would dwarves risk life and limb to retrive one sock during a full scale siege onslaught.
The depressing thing is that they quite often lose life and limb(s) in the process.

Spears are like arrows that you hold.
They mess you up.

Are you sure he threw you off?  It's much more likely that you dodged off, which happens quite often if you have high wrestling skill (and leave "Move Around" enabled in [c]ombat preferences).

But yeah, town leaders can be excessively badass.  Most of them don't even have any kills.

Adventurer: BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
It glances away!
Adventurer: You can't kill what you can't hit!
*JUMP*
*CRASH*
Adventurer: OH ARMOK THAT STINGS!
Spearmaster: ...
The *-+iron spear+-* is lodged in the wound!
Spearmaster: twisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwisttwist
You have bled to death!

I've always found Town Leaders to be quite fair to fight against. Obviously spearmen are always dangerous to fight against because they deal out pierce damage, and you also got pretty unlucky to fall off the 2nd floor. However, town leaders should be strong because they are supposed to be veteran warriors who have built or taken over a town using their martial skills to defend it (and they have superior weapons and armour to prove it). Just because you spent a few days training your adventurer to throw rocks doesn't mean he should easily beat a badass who has spent 100 years butchering elves and giants.

No...  Those links point to the previous/next thread.  Perfectly valid that clicking one took you somewhere else.

ALWAYS grab their spear, even if you can't wrestle it from them it stops them from using it. If you can get it away from them then its all the better. Its always hilarious to impale a spearmaster with their own weapon.

It isn't that Townleaders are overpowered

It is that overpowered people tend to become Town Leaders.

I've been killed by naked Dwarven Kings before.

Spearmasters are probably the most dangerous.  I failed to kill one with a modded arachnid 4 times when I savescummed.  He just stuck the damn spear in and kept twisting.

I presume elite marksmen are hard too, but since you can normally get close to them it may mean they can't shoot you *shrug*.

Actually elite marksmen are basically much slower spearman/ pikeman at close range. They still shoot but since you're within 2 feet of them its rather pointless.

In my experince, spearman are the most dangerous if you're not prepared. However, the most dangerous for me has always been the lucky lasher. Because of the gore damage a lasher can do some pretty horrible damage to your organs if he gets lucky. I've never lost to a spear master, but I have lost to a master lasher who attacked me from behind, broke my lower body and propeled me off a building here I was whipped to death by him.

Yea i think the town leader is just the strongest person in the town.I mean would you really want a douchebag someone like a noble as your leader, or the dude who would actually try to defend you?
