What clothes will dwarves actively take and wear?
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:38:47 am »

Basically the clothing on my dwarves are getting ruined after a long time, so I ordered a lot of clothes to be made. Shirts, trousers, etc. While they take the shirts/trousers/socks/shoes just fine, the caps and gloves are just sitting there. So... what should I make to get them all taken?

Caps and Gloves are considered to be armor, aren't they? Don't dwarves who are soldiers only wear them, or hunters? I'm not sure though, so don't listen to me :p Search it on the Wiki?

What we would consider "basic clothing" is all armour - socks are one of the best armour in the game.  The combat system does not distinguish between what we would call "armour" and "clothing".

(The wiki has the values... somewhere...)

Look at what they're wearing now, and make more of that. Should be simple enough.

Dwarves are only slightly concerned about the clothes they are wearing. The only thing that you can do is produce lots and lots of clothes and make them available to your dwarves, through shops, if need be.

I wish they were slightly more zealous about clothing themselves, since I have a bunch of naked children with moderate wounds to their brain, spine, and internal organs from cold damage who still haven't gotten a clue. One even bled to death.

I have a related question, so I'll just tag it on here:

What is the maximum armor/clothing, by layer, that a dwarf will wear?

More specifically, I intend to load up a dwarf for maximum protection and I want to know what they will wear when armor is set for clothing that will remain on their body when they change to leather, what there will be added and stay on until they change to chain, and then to plate.

The wiki says this:

"Dwarves will not take off chain mail when switched to "plate" armor level, and will not take off any kind of cap (including metal) when putting on a helm. They can also wear socks, gloves, trousers, a dress, and one or more robes under armor. They cannot, however, wear leggings and greaves at the same time, or shoes and boots."

So my guess is they would put on the following items and keep them on even when the armor is upgraded:

Clothes: socks, gloves, trousers, dress, robes+
Leather: cap, leather armor
Chain: chainmail, help, gauntlet, high boot, low boot
Plate: greaves, plate mail

The following things would not be worn:

shoes, leggings

Clothes: socks, gloves, trousers, dress, robes+
Leather: cap, leather armor
Chain: chainmail, help, gauntlet, high boot, low boot
Plate: greaves, plate mail

That list seems about right. Anything with the [SHAPED] tag on it can only have one set worn. Notably, these are leggings, greaves, helms, gauntlets, leather armor, and plate mail. Footwear is not [SHAPE]d, but dwarves seem to remove their outer pair of footwear when wearing armor. Dwarves seem unwilling to put plate mail over their leather armor, though I do think I've seen a few dwarves where this was the case. I assume it was accidental. Everything else can be stacked up at Morul's discretion. The problem is Morul's discretion.

I've have dwarves wear plate over leather pretty routinely; as far as I can tell the issue is that they will only wear two or three items on their torso, and when deciding between plate, chain, leather and shirts leather comes out on bottom.

I could be mistaken though...

The problem is Morul's discretion.

Well, he made all this shit - masterwork adamantine. If he doesn't want to wear it, I don't know what I could do to make it more appealing. Armor is all done now. Clothing is next. His wife is a legendary weaver and is making cloth for him.

I'll take a gander at the tags to see if that helps me suss it out and update the wiki with my results.

So it doesn't matter if the clothes are cloth or silk other than for trading purposes?  My map is cave spider city and the elves always want to trade me plant fiber cloth, so I have plenty of both!
