Haven and Hearth
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:48:37 pm »

Just saw this posted on TigSource, and was immediately mesmerized. It is an MMORPG that takes several aspects of things like DF and Wurm and others and forms them into a accessible form http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/

Features so far seem to include buildings, mining, farming, and more, as well as the obligatory killing wildlife all MMOs have

A map to the current Bay12 settlements. Note that the lower settlement is quite dangerous to travel to for a beginner.
Brodgar is where a new character is spawned

The blue circle is the newbie settlement and is relatively safe to hang around. The red circle to the south is where the main settlement is. The yellow circle is a stopover house along the way there.

The mining looks good. We might be able to make a DF group, or something.

Yah, formal groups aren't in the game yet but nothing stopping us from cooperating. The future promises guilds and villages and such.

Tried it. A little confusing learning how to right-click stuff to interact and walk. The mouse also lags and the buttons are a bit non-reactive (took me a few clicks to walk). But otherwise good. The lagging may just be my computer.

Hmm, it's also java, known for it's lag. Promising anyway, I've gotten in game so far and incarnated (the How-To guide from the homepage should really be built into the game).

Okay, played a bit more. I've travelled north and east a few minutes until I came to some cliffs, then circled around until I found an opening to go to above the cliffs - there are apple trees aplenty there for food. I managed to light a hearth fire and build a wicker basket - the basket especially is worth a lot of skill points :D

Is it just me, or is Youtube not working for lots of videos?

I want to see this game before trying it.

Well, getting some skills now - my log cabin up and running and know the basics of stone working. Grinding skill points now: doesn't take long if you have a tree nearby to gather a lot of branches, then build fires and light them for maximal xp, and when the fires burn and the ash fades away no mess   8)

Hmm...

My java client exited, after I finished loading the game.

Edit: it says
Code: [Select]
Failed to validate certificate.
The Application will not be executed.

Name: Java Binding to the OpenGL API
Publisher: Sun Microsystem, Inc.
From: http://download.java.net

There WAS a problem with the game's digital signature, but I have fixed it.

It seems that Java hate me... Why? I am a Javan...

http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/res/map.png

A map of the game world. At the center is where you start I assume, so that places my camp (marked by a log cabin near some apple trees) almost directly between the starting point and 'Jorb' on that map, where the jagged line is.

some skills to consider: Lumberjack lets you chop down trees with an axe, Carpentry after that will let you make boards, which are used to make assorted good stuff including Log Cabins and buckets. Will to Power is the prerequisite for basic combat. Hunting unlocks the basics of skinning kills, and tanning their hides

Got that fixed, logged in, choose gender, got dressed, typed in my name...and it crashed.
Now when I try to connect, it says that it cannot connect to the server.  Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, same here. It appears the server is down for now.
