capturing flying creatures (giant eagle)
« on: May 27, 2009, 11:16:24 pm »

So, how to do this?  I had one flying about for a while, but he never went near the cage traps I set on the mountainside, but he did swoop down one time and off a couple of haulers.  Then my ranger went hunting and brought him down.  I'd like to capture one alive and train it.  I'm sure another will turn up soon.

Just a theory, but if you put a war dog on a 3x3 platform of cage traps, perhaps they will fight and it would end up in the trap.

You mean a 3x3 platform with a chain in the middle?  That's a good idea, I'll build a tower and give it a go.

It's definitely doable. I have a stray giant eagle sitting in my dining room right now, although mine happened to meander directly into a cage trap I had lying around. It definitely helps to have large amounts of flat space in order to catch fliers.

I was halfway through a platform.  My map's not flat, at least not the mountain part the GE's turn up in.

But I've been getting a few sasquatch around.  Maybe mod them to make them tamable if the're any good.  I need some interesting/violent pets or I'm going to get bored.

Sasquatches are fairly non-violent except when harassed, at which point they're pretty fierce. Most of the deaths in my current fort are from hunters trying to take them on. (Also because I'm short on bolts.)

I have eight sasquatches. I'm thinking I'll build an ice cave and throw prisoners of war into there and hope the sasquatches rip them apart, wampa style. Or I'll build an auto butcher system using a tall cliff, a short ledge, water and pumps, and a chained breeding pair.

Build this:

████
__!!
█§d!!
__!!
████

with a roof and you will be guaranteed to have the eagle fly over one of the traps to get to the dog.

But if the eagle flies over a trap, it won't get caught, right?  or no?

I always wondered... if you have a corridor full of traps, and the corridor has a roof, whether or not flying creatures will trigger the traps..

I don't think the game is sophisticated enough to rely on "feet touching the ground" to trigger traps.   If the creature is on that z-level and in that square, they're triggered.

They'd need a no-trap tag.

Cave in knockout dust generates a large sphere so you could pave the ground with traps and then built a single support+floor ontop of it to knock them down and hope they hit a trap/not splat on impact.

Does a cage trap save things falling from great heights?

(I'd be surprised if you get a fast, firm answer on that one.

It'd be the type of thing that requires experimentation and a report back!)

I had a skeletal great white take a bite out of my bait dwarf before being caught by the cage trap on the tile it was on, so there must be a slight time delay between when a creature steps on a tile and it is actually caught.
