Strange.
« on: May 27, 2009, 03:51:21 pm »

Hey i was noticing something stange about my sparring military, the only time they ever die is from suffocation. "Urist McChampion has suffocated to death" I checked the wounds on the first one and he had a brown head wound... Then about a year later another suffocated wounded in the barracks before i actually hit the view button.

It's possible that they get a throat injury and suffocate...  Or a mangled lung perhaps.

Throat is part of the head, so most likely throat.

Any way to stop these annoying deaths? I only ever put my strong wrestlers off duty and everyone else on duty when I want them to train, that stops any newbies being hurt, but they still end up suffocting each other sometimes. Would Steel / Iron armor greatly reduce the risk of suffocation? This is wrestling only.

Sorry to ask, but if I were to train my Dwarves with Axes / Warhammers (Which is better? If I made two out of steel, which would be a swifter death for the enemy? I want to give my Leader a Warhammer for coolness, but when it comes to it, i'd prefer to gear all my soldiers with quick killing weapons) how would I stop injuries occurring, other than giving them all good armor...

Wouldn't that be displayed as throat? I mean, I'm almost sure I've seen throat wounds.

Yes, giving them good armor is a good start, regardless of what type of combat you want them to train. I'd also recommend training your soldiers before drafting them, for example enabling the pump operator labor for them and have them pump dry pumps (or whatever, just not anything you rely on going steadily). Gaining skills improves stats also, and if your guys are "extremely strong" or something like that when they start combat training, it's gonna improve their odds of surviving.

About weapons, according to this:
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Weapon
hammers seem to do a bit more damage than axes, but I think there's enough randomness in combat in this game for this to make little difference.

Toughness is the stat that's important for not-dieing. A really strong dwarf just has a higher chance of killing whoever they are fighting.

That's offset by skill in the type of fighting they are doing though. A swordmaster is less dangerous with a sword that an elite wrestler would be. This is because sparring makes different kinds of attacks than actual fighting.

So if you train your wrestlers only just up to champion and then set them at each other with weapons bad things are going to happen but once they're all ultra tough and legendary+5 wrestlers they're pretty safe even with poor weapon skill.

As for wrestling deaths you can make suffocation much less likely by not having beds and such where they are sparring. I think they're ok dodging onto the same tile as a bed but if they get thrown at it or something they may break their necks.

I mentioned strength because it was the first stat I thought of, but I see how toughness might be more useful in this situation. Also, won't agility make them dodge more competently?

So you're saying that furniture counts as obstacles when fighting/sparring? Thought it was only walls and such, but I approve of furniture being included, for realism's sake. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I design a barracks, seeing how I completely disregarded the safety hazards of improperly placed beds until now.

I think it is a maybe.  REQUIRES VERIFICATION!

Agility, I THINK, just affects how often their turn comes up.

I've heard several people say they completely stopped having wrestlers break each other's necks when they took the beds out of the barracks. They were pissed off after watching their wrestlers always get injuries on bed tiles I think.

-this has actually kind of made me worry about my fort design. Will your soldiers spar in a barracks designated off of an armor stand over one full of beds and if not is there are way to make them?

You don't need barracks off of a bed. I don't think.

I'm trying to wrap my head around a barracks without beds. Wouldn't that be more of a dojo or other training facility?

Also, without beds in your barracks, if you told your squads to "sleep in barracks", would they sleep on the ground? I'm wondering, because ordering them to "sleep in rooms" is also a strange concept if after some time a lot of your soldiers (i.e. your champions) won't have their own rooms anymore.

Armor stands and weapon racks are the two furniture items aside from beds where you can designate barracks. At your front gate is a good place to put these, so that your fortress guard can attack any intruders while your military is off somewhere else.

Also, without beds in your barracks, if you told your squads to "sleep in barracks", would they sleep on the ground?

Yes. In the barracks.

I've heard several people say they completely stopped having wrestlers break each other's necks when they took the beds out of the barracks. They were pissed off after watching their wrestlers always get injuries on bed tiles I think.

I don't think the wrestlers got the injuries while on the bed tiles, it just so happened that they moved to a bed once they got injured. I don't think furniture causes any damage when sparring on it.

Also, if you tire of your soldiers sparring in barracks designated from bedrooms, reduce the size of the barracks to one tile for each bed. They then won't be able to spar there.

If you have multiple barracks rooms, from what I've noticed. One with an armor stand for sparring and a room of beds for sleeping. They will spar in the training barracks and sleep in the sleeping barracks. It's mostly about setting up those pesky "areas" for that stuff.

You're talking about traffic areas, i.e. making the training barracks a high traffic and the sleeping barracks a low traffic zone?
