yes, you can engrave dwarf made walls. 

Though, here's an idea that sounds even more dwarfy:

a glass room SURROUNDED by magma.  There will be a small entrance chamber sided with gold statues, leading to a magma chamber.

Mmmm... yeah, not so much...

I believe there is a way to put up stone walls, flood the chamber with magma, which melts the stone into a solid mass, and then carve it out again (might take double-thick walls?) - that would work, but it pushes this into the mini-mega project category.

make the lava 3ish levels tall, build pumps/power system out of magma safe material, and pressurize the room with it.

walls dont melt.........

you can make obsidian walls with water though, that can be engraved

Magma will simply destroy engravings on floors, last time I checked. Not melt block walls or floors.
