Well, not really. Making things up as I go along and following the rules of small-scale DF fortress entrances. I mean honestly, don't you build your aboveground entrances somewhat like this?

I have long thought that fortifications could be a good idea, but as a melee type they really aren't my thing though I am willing to pitch in towards the costs.

Well, jeez, I think I have to raise the cost for Fortifications. They where cheep because zombies could knock them down easier than walls, but after seeing that...

Walls have this innate disadvantage of creating a blind spot that can't be shot at. As a result, the best defenses only use them when absolutely necessary.
