Put the cat behind a door, set to not permit pets. Once the danger's passed, open it back up, letting the cat access the lever. No dwarfs involved.
If there is no room for failure or premature lava drowning, it's not dwarvy enough.

If the cat refuses to move, you starve.  I deem it dwarfy.

It would be even more dwarvy if it was a hostile orc that went across the pressure plate to open the cages!!!

... Wait a minute...

I may have to try this now. I love the apocalyptic feel of it. Kinda sci-fi, but seems dwarven, too. Maybe would be a viable option against an enemy the dwarves knew they couldn't defeat otherwise.

I'm imagining the mindset of a generation of dwarves that have gone into "stasis" several times and lived to tell about it.

So the entire future of your fortress hinges on the whims of a cat?

This is as dwarfy as breeding merpeople!

This makes me think of the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where the prisoners are trying to talk the dog with the keys into coming a little closer.

One of my recruits was flying over the earth at Mach 2 (680.58 meters/second) and got sucked into a cage trap, saving his life. It's not too bad.
Fixed physics and grammar.

Fixed everything.

Urist Austin, Axedwarf.  A dwarf barely alive.  Gentledwarves, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic dwarf. Urist Austin will be that dwarf. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster.

Do you have enough information about atmospheric conditions for that?
