Build grates on all your rivers, that should stop them. Just make sure you get a good head start or you may see

Canadian Peasant has cancled Install Grates: Interrupted by Carp!

Then your line will be breached and you will be forced to start again further away.

Also, if you are forced into conflict, preferably use the wrath of your canadian lumber, or cast flare.
