non-working dwarves
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:36:39 pm »

I'm pretty sure this has been asked about before but I've ran into this problem and I can't seem to find any of the old topics on it. Most of my dwarves have suddenly stopping doing stuff as if their on break but their not. They won't haul anything or work in the workshops, they will deconstruct workshops oddly enough, they won't go anywhere even if i assign a new meeting area, ect. I've tried turning them to military and back but it didn't work. I'm kinda pissed about this because this is a map I like and its only the spring/summer after the embark so I still only have 7 dwarves, only the miners are doing anything.

Off the top of my head, I'd guess you've filled all your stockpiles.  If a dwarf has nowhere to haul something to, they have nothing to haul.

Another possibility is that you've accidentally removed a key stair/ramp that gets them out of where they are.

Edit - oh, as for the workshops, it's possible you managed to forbid them all if you were messing with the z-stock menu.  Use d, b, c to check and reclaim any/all.

Guess I forgot to mention that they do have access, there are dumping jobs avalible, they have gone inside to sleep.

(cross-edit, see above)

Dumping is a low-priority job, and sometimes it takes a while for them to click on it.

Like I said above this is a new fortress, thus no forbidding on stuff yet, and they won't work in the workshops.

Like I said above...

(There is no time-line on making a mistake.)  ;)

Hrmmm... okay, by the numbers...

1) Labors are designated on dwarfs
2) A definite path
2.1) No stairs/ramps accidentally removed
2.2) No doors locked
2.3) No "dwarfs stay inside" orders preventing movement
3) Workshops are not forbidden (d, b, c)
3.1)Workshop <P>rofile not changed to exclude certain skill ranks or dwarfs
3.2)Work orders are thru that workshop, NOT in "<j>ob <m>anager screen.
4) No extreme personality quirks ("leisurely pace", "not do more work than necessary", etc etc)

Other than that... I got nuthin'.

I've had times when dwarfs just balk, but eventually they kick in - and all 7 seems a bit extreme. Maybe someone else has something.

(It's not hard to re-gen a world, if it comes to that.  Dirt easy, in fact - it's just the hassle of losing what you've already done, and that embark team.)

Well there have been reports of this but I wasn't sure if a fix had been put out by the community yet. I accually found a new spot thats really interesting. hfs, magma pipe, chasm, pit, lots o trees, plenty of mountainous terrain, no river anything but lots of pools on the surface. Now I've got to see if its got anywhere near the ammount of iron at the old local and if the seiges are still awsome.

The spot I was at before I was redoing for funs sake though for some reason the dwarf civs didn't turn out the same way as the old save so gotta see if seiges still show on beak dogs.

God damn it, it appears the same issue has cropped up in the new fort as well. Does anyone know if this bug has to do with a save or with the game?

I'm not sure why this is happening but check that they don't have spinal/feet or leg injuries. A light gray wound on the foot can stop a Dwarf moving. Also, they may just be really weirdnormal Elves with beards pretending to be Dwarves. Stupid Elves!

(Apparently it's a brand new fort, with only 7 dwarfs - twice now. I doubt if all 14 have had carp-related spinal injuries.  At least not that early in the game.)

Upload a copy of the game so someone can take a look.

I think it may be something within the game file and not the save, I did a clean install and put the save (at least the save before the issue happened) into the new one and its gone pass the point where the issue occured.

edit: The thing finally uploaded, really slow for some reason. So heres the link
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1054
and the save that I know for sure has it is lokummon in folder ecamo (I had changed the name when it messed up). Five of the dwarves arn't doing what I want them to do.
