you enjoy perfection too much.

if you start enjoying "pretty good" almost much as you enjoy perfection, with -happy for the effort involed in perfection...
eh I'm not really an expert.

I have hurt my forts with dulling the edges of cliffs, when I should be digging living quarters and metal ores, and preparing a wall.

try terrifying ocean to see if that can loosen your tactics.

That would most likely just corrupt his save file beyond all recognition, what with constant save-scumming.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. When affected, one is unable to stop thinking about something until they complete whatever they feel compelled to do, whether that's fixing the 'problem' or an unrelated distraction. Or at least, that's my understanding.

Anyway, if all else fails, dig out the entirety of each z-level and make everything out of constructed walls.

Can't engrave em.

Also it would get awfully laggy by that point.

Not to mention it would take a hell of a long time to dig each level out, even if you make all of your dwarves miners. Which you can't because you still have to farm/gather food and make booze. Starting with a small embark area (like 2x2) could help, but still.....

Anyways, yea I should have thought of that for the acronym in the first place, heh.

Just try to think like a messy, earth-crazy dwarf. Love the flow of the mountain. Make it the heart of your design.

Make it a challenge - no serious terraforming.  Conform to the flow of the hillsides - make those your template.  Build above ground to make most use of the terrain, not force the terrain to conform to some "multiple of 2".

we should have an OCD challenge.

the person with best OCD fort wins!

Then while people take 5 years to finish that fort, we make a challenge with a time limit and watch people cringe and suffer.

For me it's the other way 'round. The entrance to my fort is pretty disorganized, but it has a certain chaotic, haphazard, charm that adds to the appeal.

If you get disappointed that your forts always look similar, mix up the entrance a bit, go with a ramping descent instead of the central staircase. Plan a massive underground excavation to make an artificial cavern to build in. Embark on mountain instead of soil or vice versa. Even desert vs. forest vs. swamp can influence the growth of your fort and make everything look fresh.

I used to do the 5x5 central staircase all the time, with a wall/moat ring. All the time. Then I tried a ramp hallway entrance deep into the earth by about 10 z-levels. Awesome watching the wagons and sieges travel deep underground just to get to my front door, but took longer to set up, and all dwarves lived in the long hallway for over a year. Just set yourself one major thing to change and try it. I used to rewall soil layers because I like the look of smooth stone outlining the rooms there.

I always try to do matching stones for furniture and constructions. I rely on a tight quantum stockpiling of stones next to the workshops. I'm so crazy, I want my wood items to be towercap only. All that oak can acacia can fuel my forges for all I care! And uniform quality depending on the purpose of the item.

Crazy uniform or crazy freeform can be fun

My latest "failure" nothing wrong with it in my eyes i just cant seem to get it together, I was trying to smooth the whole damn mountain side with my miners , masons even some other misc dwarfs. I finally stopped after i got another migrant wave and I was up to about 40 dwarfs and realized.... hey i dont have any rooms.  I just seem to hit a wall and cant play anymore I WANT to I just cant. Happens all the time I never even lose properly anymore.

P.S. i started with 10 dwarfs i think and its civ forge mod.

EDIT: Engrave -> Smooth
