My annoying OCD always makes me abandon forts!
« on: May 26, 2009, 04:39:56 pm »

Damn my OCD to hell. How many times have I abandoned a Fort because it looks "ugly" or it isn't "symmetrical" etc. etc.

I like my Forts to be perfect, and when it isn't, I always start over. Has anyone else got this annoying problem? Right now, when I embark, i'm like a robot and get to work straight away, and my Forts always look the same. The standard 3x3 staircase, and the 5x5 Farm Plot and the 9 x 11 barracks. It's so annoying haha.

I have it just the opposite.  I find the symmetrical designs to be ugly.  Not only that, but it can easily cause conflicts with efficient designs over multiple z-levels, unless I am building a tower or a large ceiling.  Building everything the same is also impractical for me and most of my dwarfs early on.  I do build fractal designs, but they are not always totally symmetrical.

I appreciate symmetrical channeling on moats for obvious defense reasons.

Many of my main staircases are 2x2, but their hallways sometimes work diagonally instead of straight up or to the side.

I'm addicted to genning worlds and picking out sites. I rarely play past 3 years before the management of my dwarves becomes tedious and I start looking for new sites.

I think I have about 20 different saves ready to go with all different kinds of sites.

I've been doing above-ground fortresses lately due to my OCD.  Since it is all made of constructions, no digging, I always feel like I can destroy and rebuild buildings as I see fit, if I choose to at a later time.  But even still, I usually don't.  Just the mere thought that I could if I wanted helps to tame my OCD.

Jesus, Exponent, me too. I always try and build high up ASAP because it looks so cleaner and nicer. I never EVER use different stones to build walls either. I always use the same stone so it looks uniform and nice, rather than having darker bits and then lighter bits blotched about. I hate when I mess up a z level and refuse to build on it :x

I try to integrate map features into the fortress design (building around and over chasms, pulling in water for room accents, digging around magma pipes, and so on), which pretty well precludes symmetry. Give it a shot; I think it makes for more interesting designs.

My ultimate symmetry design has turned out to actually be asymmetric. I dig down with a 5 wide spiral ramp and everything flows off of that. In a way it's almost flat.

I think I'm going to try to change that design some though- or maybe just find a nice chasm and try to make it like a cliffside village or something.

Zip them up and upload them! I hate waiting for worldgen and trying to find the features I want.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Oh, please DO! Just had a funny thought.  Somebody slaving away at genning sites because they hate playing the actual game.  hahaha.

Well I don't hate the game but I am a huge map nerd so...

I'll go through the saves I have and pick out a few that I think are most interesting. I don't go for Dwarf Heaven sites, btw, I like to find crazy natural features and think of a way to incorporate them (in my daydreams, haven't actually 'completed' any yet).

edit: I'll start a new thread so as not to hijack this one any further. It'd be fun to play the same site as someone else if anyone is interested in that...

There is a deep (and serious) truth - that any act of creation is an act of self-limitation.  By taking your imagination and applying it to the physical world (even in ascii form), you are removing the limitlessness of that imagination.  The artist paints, but is bounded by the frame.  The gamer builds a world, but is bounded by the "reality" of the world they create.

Compared to imagination, that is inevitably disappointing. So you can't compare it to a "perfect (imagined) world", you have to take it in context.

Accept it, don't fight it.

I must commend you.  But don't turn into a philosopher, I think we already have one of those.

...said the goblin, as they threw him into the chasm.

Seriously, my forts tend to look the same because I like the 6x6 central hall with rooms off of it on each level.  The central area is useful for storage and dining tables, the rooms can be eight 4x4s for living or working, or a mess of small rooms for dwarf slums.  Some levels go off the path due to mineral strikes, but I generally deal with it.  ("Let's see...smoothed magnetite floor, constructed iron walls, and platinum furnishings.  That ought to do it...here comes the Baron!  Quick, get the doors on, and add an engraving!")

I am with you.

I want it to look a certain way, so I now only build obsidian fortresses that are poured with magma/water so that I can control the entire thing.

I am currently trying to make a 43+ z-level tower.  I keep starting over because one little thing or another goes wrong or just doesn't work as expected.

I have started over at least 10 times on the same map.

I wonder if I will ever finish it.
