Using a seed

I have a seed from a generated world, but I have no idea how to use it. Can anyone help? Also, will worlds genned in 40d work in 40d11?

You take the seed and the parameters, and paste them into the worldgen.txt in your init folder.  Then you generate a world with them in DF.

Not sure about the difference with 40d and d11.
