well, dust is mostly dead skin cells, so the dwarves don't have to excrete any other way, and can still provide food for the fungus.
Now that, I like.
The perpetual motion machine explaination was more interesting though. :(

(snip)course this would still violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics, but hey, poop!
Wouldn't be the first time Dwarfs violated the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

The underground plants get all their nutrients from the soil. That's why they aren't green.

underground plants are green, unless they are growing on something muddy, in which case they inherit the brown from the tile.  I hope at some point this gets fixxed, as verdant green underground forests are much nicer to look at.

underground plants are green,
Not in real life they wouldn't be.  Fungus.  Not plants.  That's the whole point of people worrying about the feasibility of underground farming.  They don't see how it is actually possible.

We could just have our dwarves paint them green.  For flavor.

Joe MincedPuppet: Oh hey! Quarry bush leaves!  Yum Yum!  Wait...why are they purple?

Bill TinyTallows: New mandate, all food has to be painted purple.  Take a bite, it's plump helmet flavor too.

Joe MincedPuppet: Why oh why did we choose the plump helmet loving mayor over the star sapphire loving one!? *Fist shake*

See: Quarry Bush wiki article.

I reckon they get their heat energy from magma.

You gotta do something with the dirt those rotting corpses produce, maybe this is how the quarry bush is possible: it's fueled by the death of elves.

Wait, so booze is really just thousands of refined cell-sized mechanisms, waterwheels and pumps?

 That... would explain things.

Oooh. Idea; we need to recreate Ankh Morpork in DF!

Begin with a human city with a river running through it, occupy a few *ahem* unoccupied houses and start digging! Bonus points for lots of silt and mud, further bonus for using perpetual power: The Axle.

Darn. Now I have a hankering to find a city...
