I've played a variant (that I like the sound of better) where instead of that, each player does the guessing thing in turn. (Also your guess must increase at least one of the two, but you can increase both.) However, no one loses dice until someone calls them on it. When that happens, they check. If there were as many as bid, then the caller loses a die; however, if there were less, then the bidder loses a die.

It'd take longer, but it's a bit more fun in my opinion.
