Underground Farming
« on: May 25, 2009, 08:01:18 pm »

Currently I'm in desperate need for wood and the caravans do little to help, so to solve this I need a constant supply in which I can cut down personally. Now I've already looked into Tower Cap Underground Tree farming and currently I'm near certain I have the aspects of being able to farm them.

A) I have an empty space near an underground river. It's clear of any rock.

B) The tiles are (Peat Cavern Floor)

So what am I missing? How do I do this underground farming?

1) You can't use reveal to show the underground river.  you have to discover it normally.  this triggers a flag to allow Tower Caps to grow.

2) Any muddy stone or soil will start growing tower caps once this occurs.  Note that you actually have to find the underground river or lake.  It can't just be on your map but undiscovered.

The ground doesn't have to be near the river, just underground and on a map with an underground river or lake.

If you didn't use reveal to find the river, try getting the ground muddy. The game MIGHT make a distinction between soil and muddy ground for the purposes of this.

Lastly, it might take a while for the first saplings and shrubs to start growing. How long have you waited?

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I can confirm that I have had tower-caps grow on dry underground soil layers.

Did you get the "You have discovered an underground river" popup?

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.

I don't think so.. But I have a river on the map (Which is above ground) but it also cuts through underground so wouldn't that work?

If it's an Underground River, you can get tower-caps. If the river's just a brook, none for you.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Double confirmed - however - I believe I saw evidence that they grow better on muddy ground, like maybe 3x as dense. Only noticed it once, and recently, and haven't had the opportunity for a side-by-side comparison since.

Yep.  If the river drops down a z-level to go underground, I guess it may work.  Never had one like that myself... and I'm not sure how it'd trip the "underground river" flag.  Unless it notified you straight away on embark?

But if the river stays on the same z-level and simply runs through a "tunnel" in a nearby hill, it won't.

If the river starts above-ground I can 90% sure say that it doesn't count as a UR, some rivers do have drops that go down a z-level, but I don't think a river has the ability to run -literally- underground.

Indeed it's more like the river "cuts" through the mountain/hill. If you check the levels above you'll see that there is no ground there.

I dug out a bunch of sand so I wouldn't have to bother irrigating my farm but it remained sad sad sand.
Eventually go some other area wet and had towercaps growing there.

When you have a volcano that pokes up through the surface or even just an obsidian cap magma buildings will start out enabled. Crazy exposed underground rivers outta work the same way if there was any way for them to start exposed.

It is possible to sometimes find Underground Rivers that pierce the surface; i have one in my latest fort, imagine my surprise when i went to the Units screen and found it full of Underground Rivermen.

Havn't tried tower cap farming tho.

Well thank you *everyone* for the quick responses and taking up your comments and so forth, I've figured out that my river is -not- an underground river and juts a normal one, and thus wont work.

Thanks again!
