atom smash memory test..
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:30:42 am »

I am to move thousands of stones into the atom smasher so they may all be destroyed at one point, the goal is to cause the game to crash.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

If the game can handle all those stones for a starter, the REMOVAL of them shouldn't crash it. Instead it will improve your scrolling speed through the "z" list. If it does though, you may report it as a bug in memory overflow or anything else.

A pro tip: don't make threads about something you're going to make... A dwarfy way: make a thread about something which is done :).

It shouldn't crash, but I think the game will freeze a few seconds.
At least that's what happened when I dumped 30k+ stones (underground temple to Armok, tower dug into the mountain, etc...) together with more than 10 sieges/ambushes worth of goblin crap (I only kept the iron) down the HFS chasm.
All of it was placed on a single grate and released when my blind mayor pulled the lever connected to it.... the game paused for a rather long time and I really thought I crashed it, but it startet running again after a while   ;D

(Oh and it was a lot faster, too. At least 20 FPS more  8) )

I'm going to use custom smelter reactions to make the bulk of the things to be dumped

Thats because it was trying to calculate all the stuff falling.

A drawbridge crush is nearly instantaneous, and the only way to crash the game through it, imo, is to get a 16x16 embark, strip mine the entire thing, and dump all that stone under the bridge. Even then, i doubt it'll crash.

If you're still gonna do it, mod your dwarves with this:
[NOEAT][NOSLEEP][NODRINK][SPEED:1]
That'll get rid of all that unnecessary slacking going on.

I would recommend this method (added on to Eadgle's stuff): Give your dwarves a 100 damblock (in case of carp, sieges, etc). Use DTIL ti start with like 100 dwarves, then dig channels around the edge of the map. Collapse it all, and built a compactor at the bottom.

The use DTIL's unpauser tool to let your dwarves haul for a night or two while you sleep (leave your computer on). Compact in the morning.

Dwarven engineering: Using quantum physics to place about a million rocks in one place then smash them with a drawbridge.

You might also try using the correct tokens:

Code: [Select]
[NO_DRINK]
[NO_EAT]
[NO_SLEEP]

Just ribbin' ya, I'm a nice~guy~

But yeah that's a common mistake, underscores are important.

Don't you simple need to exceed the bit cycle, as in dumping over 36 000 somethng stones to get into the negativ's?

It's a lot more than 36000.  I've had as many as 80,000 at one time.
