Major river?!
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:13:35 pm »

now when i embarked at a major river i expected something like 15 tiles or so across...not 35....oh well, guess its time to make a fortress completly above the water ;D

but there is also 2 smaller rivers that feed into it from the north and south and both have a waterfall around the same place....so this is pretty cool

ok....minor but funny addon, an entire school of carp just fell down the south waterfall so blood started filling the river :o
again...another school of carp jumped down the north waterfall...so now almost the entire river wall is blood stained

I'm pretty sure people are going to want that seed. Wide river + waterfalls is often sought after.

Major rivers are anything bigger than rivers and upwards. They can be anything from 15 to 40+ tiles, the biggest i've seen was 42 tiles wide (I don't think they can get much bigger than that though, as a single map tile is 48 across)

I also had a 20 tile major river with a 6z level waterfall once. Lost the map.

How does one go about finding a major river? All I ever look for is the river in the local map, then embark -- where does it say what kind? Can one push for more major rivers in the parameters somehow?

They show up differently on the regional map, same as a smoothed wall i think. And say major river: *name* on the right.

Yep.

YOU GOTTA SET THOSE RIVER START LOCATIONS TO MAXIMUM, BRAH

Actually, set them to something reasonable and make sure the "Periodically Erode Extreme Cliffs" option is set to "No." Not eroding the cliffs will make for better waterfalls.

I never seem to find anything bigger than a brook in good locations.

That is because all cool terrain-stuff is mutually exclusive in the current world-gen.  :(

I once found a major river that dropped 1 z level, but because of how the shore was set up, it overflowed and flooded the bottom z level of the map, all by itself.

Also, use a large worldgen every time. The "standard" size usually doesn't have anything interesting.

Major rivers aren't that hard to find; what's awesome is when a major river goes through a decent elevation change and you end up with 20-level high sheer cliffs. This is difficult to find because major rivers usually only occur near oceans, where the ground is mostly flat.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Guys, I just genned a world with an awesome river system.

It's only got that waterfall (about 9 z-levels), but there's a thick river cutting straight through that high plateau. It's a sheer drop into the river. I'm considering making a community fort with two segregated communities on either side. Maybe some clinging to the walls, too. It even comes with Muskoxen on embark.

If any dwarf wants to migrate to the other side, say hello to the macguyver'ed transfer system. A bridgeapult.

If you survive, congrats, your wish is granted. If you don't, that's your punishment for wanting to leave.

Sounds fun. ;D
