Well after a long break from DF, I have decided to experiment a few things and for these experiments I need logs from the smelter but I when I try to make them all I get are useless items called logs. They do nothing.

Also if anyone knows how to get bauxite, that would be very nice for the experiment.

As for bauxite, it's found in sedimentary rock layers, which show up as white on the embark screen. Or, if you were asking for another reaction:
