coins and rent
« on: May 23, 2009, 05:40:45 am »

From what I've read (not so much experienced, since so far my only game where the econ had triggered was rather short-lived) the economy, and especially its aspects of currency (as opposed to credit) and rent isn't very well developed yet.

Seeing how far broken this system is, and how it doesn't add any realism, is there any benefit to having rent enabled and minting coins? Or to enabling the economy in the first place?

Help me see the wisdom in having an economy, lest I put in "economy:no" or at least "rent:no" in my init.

The economy doesn't give any benefits except that your dwarves can buy things. This gives them a happy thought. But it's not very well developed indeed and it's a good idea not to mint coins. If you just do that you'll see that the people who do very little(only hauling) have to sleep in the barracks because they can't affort their room. Personally i think this adds to the realism and that's why I do economy but without coins.

I made a few coins, because I was curious to see what they looked like.

Personally, I think coins should be made into sortof non physical items which can be carried around in a purse rather than hauled.  The economy should also make your dwarves more likely to work harder  :P

In that case, I think I might leave economy on but turn rent off. Instead of considering this to be unrealistic, let's call it public housing.

You could just create artificial work by making dwarfs haul stuff back and forth pointlessly all the time (kinda like what the government's doing with the car companies).

I suppose it's just a placeholder, but I never have rent on. It never made sense to me that I had to deliberately make some of my rooms extra crappy so dwarves could afford them. It's silly that you can have more rooms than dwarves, and still have homeless dwarves.

I guess it's 'realistic' (at least in intent, if not implementation) but I generally ignore the economy. It just 'feels' wrong in a fantasy setting. you never hear the epic tale of how the dwarves carved out the great underground city of moria, dug too deep, fought the demons, and then had a housing crisis.

I sort of view my fort as an elaborate mining company, so I figure I might as well provide my employees with free lodging. Especially since you need quite a bunch of menial, minimum-wage workers who might not even make enough money to otherwise afford a room.

I totally did this the other day... have them cycle beer between three different stockpiles. It really works well when you don't have anything for the menials to be doing! :D

Or make a casino (slot machines = levers which do nothing).

Shift-P r? That seems like a great idea. Give all your idle dwarves their very own lever, set on repeat.

Has anyone tried actually minting the recommended number of coins, and if so does it make any kind of difference?

That's a great idea, seeing how it seems like less work than juggling stuff in stockpiles.

A lot of clutter, and more useless hauling tasks.  It also makes the nobles happy.  None of these things are desirable.
