Author Topic: Ability to plan (b)uildings on (d)esignated, but not yet mined areas  (Read 556 times)

This suggestion is very simple, and involves no content -- it is just to make the game easier to use for players.

I suggest the ability to (b)uild workshops, doors, furniture, and other objects on areas that have been (d)esignated to be mined out, before they're actually mined. Of course, the job must be implicitly suspended until the area is cleared of rock. If at any time the area is undesignated, or revealed later to be impassible (underwater, in a lava tube, suspended in mid-air, etc.) all buildings placed in those areas can be immediately cancelled. Doing this will allow more robust planning of fortress expansions of every kind, and will noticeably reduce the amount of things that the player has to focus on during these fortress expansions.

That's the best idea I've heard in ages, can we also have smoothing, engraving & Room creation as well so we can do everything in one pass going directly from solid rock to fully functional living and working space.

EDIT: Just ready your other thread, seems you already thought of that.  Please do add this to Eternal Suggestions voting, I'm prepared to move a vote too it if you do.

Sounds good. Also sounds like an auto-unsuspend option/variety of settings(unsuspend when occupied creature leaves, when mined out, when water is gone, etc.) might go very nicely with.

a possible addition to this suggestion: allow the designations of constructions/machines/doors/anything even if their components do not exist yet (CANT BUILD DOOR, NEED DOOR), or if their position is not yet reachable. building towers is extremely irritating in this regard.
