I've recently tried to initiate a few of my close friends into The Evil Dwarven Conspiracy Dwarf Fortress. However, they were repulsed at first sight with the graphics and the only one who bothered playing a tidbit was killed off by the Holy God Carp Steep Learning Curve. I need some help creating a convincing argument to get them playing. Now, help me. You will get cookies.

My advice, thow them a gfx mod like the Mayday set. Maybe you'll have better luck than i've had.

I don't bother with anyone put off by the ASCII, *sigh* it's not worked at all.

Than again now that I think about, I have an excuse to get back to work on ascii graphics that I never bothered finshing.

This. Refer them to the more interesting stories that people wrote while playing Dwarf Fortress. They may just realize that it's not something they can dismiss so lightly if so many people had such Fun.

Tell them stories about it. About tossing nobles in magma. Flooding forts from the bottom with pressurised water. Sieges by unicorns and hippos. Elves drowned or roasted...

"If you can't build a tower upon a sheer cliff face over which you may throw precisely one hundred and fifty-two kittens and seven stalwart dwarves to their explosive doom some fifty stories below, then brother, your game ain't much of a sandbox, is it?"

Here's what I've found to be useful; warn them beforehand about "lame" graphics. They'll assure you that they aren't that shallow (EVERY HUMAN BEING WILL DO THIS), and proceed to download the game. They then feel obliged to play, because they don't want to look like both shallow and lying jerks. This worked on my family, and then it worked on my friends. I think I found the ultimate solution.

I once yelled at a friend's party about how much I hated immigrants because they came and ate all my food an drank all my beer.
That did not convinced any of the people there, most of them being Asians and Indians and all that. I got a big awkward silence out of it.
And I looked even more of an idiot when trying to explain myself with descriptions of the game.
I think I should have just kept my mouth shut and remained perceived has a huge racist.

Also, I think I'm starting to annoy my coworkers with my constant blabbering of what goes on in my fort.
I'm probably being worst than those other guys who keep talking about WoW and their leet PVP skills.

I'm the perfect example of doing it wrong.
