Incidentally, you can fix the blind-spot problem for your archers. Just let them stand on gratings that are placed on top of fortifications.

"fortifications" - not since "levels" has a word been more poorly chosen...

D, I'm trying to picture this: Do you mean actually on top of the ("carved fortifications = archer defenses"), or the general concept of a raised defensive structure, walls & etc all combined, with a grate to fire down through (behind the archer defenses)?

I think they mean a traditional wet moat, Albedo.  Horrifying as it sounds, I don't think they realized that the same could be accomplished with magma.  Magma doesn't freeze.

Put a top over the moat to keep the water from freezing so no one can walk over it in winter... there is a hidden flaw in this cunning defensive plan...

Fortifications are the wall type thing.  Walls are more like what you said it might be.  Or maybe parapets.

Aquaducts are from the 2-D old school boatmurdered style game.

They are gone now.

Yes. Boatmurdered was 2-d.  That is why the elephants were so pissed.  They could not have their massive side fully represented in 2-d.  So they killed everything.

In DF, "fortifications" can mean 2 entirely different but painfully related things - the physical defenses that your dwarfs climb around on while defending your fortress, and the square cut-outs that protect archers while they shoot through them.

(There's a specific medieval name for those, and it completely escapes me right now.  "embrasures" or "battlements" or "petards" or "quatrefoils" or something - but none of those.  I know what all those are, and they're not it, thanks.)

I've always known 'em as Crenellated Battlements, or Crenellations for short.  aka Castellations.
