Creator of Artifact Quern did not get experience
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:39:52 am »

I appear to have a mason at proficient skill level that has made an artifact obsidian quern.  He made it a couple of years ago, but he's been a mason ever since, pumping out coffins and the like, so there's no chance that his skill had eroded due to lack of use.  I found out because I was looking in my artifacts menu to check the value of yet another accursed wooden craft artifact, and I noticed the quern.....Then I remembered that I don't have any legendary masons.

So, I looked at every legendary I had to make sure that they weren't a legendary mason that I had forgotten about, and none were.  So I scrolled back a couple of years in the announcements to find out who made the quern, and zoomed to them.  Sure enough, they had created Cattensavot Ondinzimesh, Channeledstood the Faded Phantom, an Obsidian quern.  But they were still at Proficient skill level.

Does anyone know how this might have happened?

Artifacts made via possession do not grant experience. This is as opposed to fey moods secretive moods, fell moods, and macabre moods, which all do. Read the wiki for more information.

Right, forgot about that....I'm pretty sure it was a secretive mood though.

Check if you have any legendary miners, in that case.  If a dwarf goes into a strange mood with Miner as his highest skill, he will claim a mason's workshop, make a mighty work of masonry, and come out of it a better miner.  I think engravers claim a craftsdwarf's workshop, but I'm not 100% sure on that so check your engravers, too.

Ok, thanks for the information.  However, the guy that made the quern was already a mason beforehand (albeit a poor one).  I'm just going to say that I remembered wrong and it was a possession.  Thanks for your help, guys.

You can check if it was a possession mood by looking in the gamelog.txt file.  Search for "has claimed" and look at the lines above any matches.  Or, search for the dwarf's name.
