Yeah, zombie versions of animals that are normally hostile anyway are typically less dangerous than the living versions. They're slooooooow, so by the time they've taken their first swipe your dwarves have already beaten them half to death. Just don't use piercing weapons (or wrestling, for that matter) and you'll be fine.

Now, a skeletal GCS would be a different matter. I wonder if they can still make silk?

Yep, it should be fun selling elves it.  Make sure you transfer it to the most rickety cage possible.

The Zombie GCS is your new lord and master.

Lock it away in the chasm. Wall it up most of the way and build a door that can be remotely Hang a sign on the door that says "Tree Dance" and tell the Elves that there's hot, young, single trees inside who are ready in all the right ways. Eyebrow waggle encouraged, here.

The Zombie GCS demands live sacrifices of Elves. Satisfy its never-ending hunger for the flesh of the living.

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.

Well, save that game, because this is rare beyond rare.

Since the miasma is revealing where they are, you could try to kill them with ballistae.  B's have a range of upwards of 100 tiles or so, so if you can get a LOS it might work, and you might be able to construct a solid defensive position w/o triggering them.

Might require some bait as well.

Or cage traps - those work just fine on zombies too.

Chucked a kitten in the pit.

There's two Zombie GCS's on that level.

And, as it turns out, a few levels down, there's a Skeletal one. Although how you get a Skeletal Spider is beyond me.

Also, kill them? What is this madness? I'm prepping the cage traps even as i speak.

Wow, that's pretty cool.

Maybe the skeletal one is mostly empty chitin?

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

Think Shelob from lord of the rings. Then imagine her squared. The horror before you is still less than even the pansiest GCS.

Giant Cave Spider.  Among the baddest of the bad.

(HFS is "Hidden Fun Stuff" - a combination of things that exceed GCS fun)

The wiki has many answers - seek wisdom there.

Fairly sure that Shelob is a giant cave spider.  Her predecessor, umm... parent? maybe, was more than just a GCS.  An Ungodly horror of the deep.  From the old world.
