Pickaxe
« on: May 20, 2009, 02:06:09 pm »

just a short one, but what about proper pickaxes, that is literally an item that is both a pick and an axe.

This would probably be fairly easy to do as a mod but i don't know how to.
So what do you think? while not the most groundbreaking change this would be useful as it would let minners defend themselves better and mean that dwarfs don't need to swap items if they have both minning and woodcutting ( not something i ever do but useful for hermits)

I think mining and woodcutting are not allowed at the same time using the ingame menus, so this should be interesting. Perhaps having a pickaxe that is both a pick and an axe would open up that possibility.

My experience with 40d does not allow a dwarf to have both mining and woodcutting jobs designated at the same time.

Yeah. Which is why we'd need Toady to program it in.

Which is why it's in the DF Suggestions forum.

A "proper pickaxe" is not a woodcutting axe.  The bladed "axe" portion is angled extremely awkwardly for a horizontal swing at a vertical object.  If that sounds confusing, just look at the picture below and then imagine swinging it sideways at a tree.

We could always have Pulaskis, then. They're a tool that can be used for digging AND cutting. They were named after a guy who saved 45 firefighters from a fire by holding them hostage at gunpoint inside a mine.

You can't make this stuff up, folks.

Wouldn't shooting the gun ignite the mine and cause chaos?

The reason for holding them at gunpoint is because the supports in the mine caught fire, which would ordinarily be an excellent reason to leave the mine.

In my experience, my miners become frighteningly effective at defending themselves (I just pray for no legendary miner tantrums) with the pick.  I think that keeping the jobs separate is good.  The Pulaski is a great fire fighting tool but if you've ever really tried to dig much with one then you wouldn't think much of using it for mining.  Plus, aren't we using battle axes for tree chopping?   A Pulaski (or even a wood axe) isn't as well suited for combat as a battle axe (of course, nor is a battle axe as well suited for tree chopping).  That being said, a Pulaski like weapon would be sweet because it could do cutting or piercing damage.

fine maybe the phrase proper pickaxe would have been better substituted with traditional dwarf mining axe for as the great Terry Prachett says " it was a tradional dwarf mining axe, with one side a pick for exracting precious metals and the other half a battle axe for those would didn't want you too".
