Get my wood cutter to cut wood

Hi.

I can't get any wood cut. I have a free healthy dwarf with wood cutting enabled, and Fight with Axe on his  soldiering screen. But I only have two axes, and both of those are in bed with injured trappers and woodworkers. I have the feeling that's why I designate trees that just don't get chopped. How do I get the sickly dwarves to let go of their now useless weapons?

Mark them for dumping, then claim them. Just make sure you're not dumping them into the local magma pipe or anything like that.
