HFS is Hidden Fun Stuff, which is a thing added by Toady to make things more "interesting".

Spoilers ahead, if you want to find out by yourself don't read this;
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is considered polite to hide it or call it HFS as not to ruin it for people.

I call Ice Age... FTW!

However I did notice a few odd occurances with in the legends tab. It speaks of "forces" that is it. "Forces" not some dwarf or elf force of mass magnitude but like a force of nature.

Maybe there is actually some magic in the game, there is just no way to harness it, but the elves know the secrets.

So we have an Elven Conspiracy in DF? Now I know the source of all those strange moods dwarves get. Elven mind-control beams!

All nobles are actually mind controlled dwarves out to steal our precious precious minerals for the glory of elfdom?

Huh. I have a bunch of elven forest retreats smack dab in the middle of a freezing forest. Unless there's some sort of Garden of Eden or Elysium thing going on where the forest retreat itself is warm and cuddly and unicorns prance around and the elves want for nothing, I think the forest retreat would likely be freezing cold as well.

Besides, it's slightly more interesting if there are clothing differences between an elf coming from a freezing taiga and an elf coming from a sweltering jungle, instead of the alternative where all their retreats are a magical 72 degrees Fahrenheit, low humidity with a chance of light rainfall in the afternoon.

It's nothing so complex.  Elves are like cows.  No, not stupid (well... that too) but they fart a lot.  Methane gas.  Their towns are small biospheres protected by greenhouse gases.

They're not called stinking tree-huggers for nothing!

It's been said that thousands of elven homeless wandering around thousands of years will reproduce Shakespeare find the one safe spot on the planet after the ash from the Dwarf-made volcano blocks out the sun and creates a nuclear winter.

I genned up to the year 10,000. by the time i got to the year 3,000 it was going 0 FPS and going at 1,000 years an hour, so i stopped early, and by my estimate it would have ran well into the night since it was gradually going slower.

they're for one, not listed as ruins in legends, and i can play as 'em in adventure, but i'd never play a hippy when i can be a Bearded Menace...

Also applies to hidden features that we are not told about, but are modeled.  Like HFS on the tissue structure.  It means that the tissue structure is needlessly deep to model damage.  We aren't told about it.  It is there.
