My world is rotated 180º
« on: May 17, 2009, 02:59:22 pm »

Apparently, the compass points South here. My largest human civ (which is also the largest in the world) is called The West Confederation.

Aren't dwarven maps rotated 90º anti-clockwise compared to that of humans in LotR / The Hobbit?

Most likely not the answer to your situation but maybe. DF was a Moria simulator in the beginning.

I have no problem, therefore, no solution.
I just decided to mention this.

Hell, on some worlds the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, which has annoyed many an adventurer who saw the sun low in the eastern sky just before taking a swim and thought it was early morning.

Ouch. I wonder where my sun rises and sets...
I also think I overpowered humans... They have huge civilizations while the dwarves are stuck with tiny little 1-3 square (on the world picture on embark) civs.

EDIT: It's probably adding in that they like deserts that overpowered them.

If your compass points south... That means your civilization must be a futuristic or extremely ancient civ, since magnetic reversal of the poles is a very rare occasion.

Or just a different world.

It would be awesome if, in future releases, we could decide how many suns and moons a world has.

I thought your world had been turned upside-down when I read that title.

That'd be pretty funny. Gravity being a force flinging you away from the earth. Unless you live there, of course, but then you've bound to come up with countermeasures. Hmmm...

If I remember right, a compass doesn't point north or south, it points north AND south.

The ancient Chinese (who invented the compass, incidentally), for example, always thought of South as being "up," contrary to modern maps which display North as "up."

While it's true that compasses point both ways, saying it points south is a figure of speech.

Also, I often draw my maps with south or west pointing up.

The Arabs also used to view the globe the opposite way around.  Alexandria was a center of science and learning in the Middle Ages, and the Egyptians had always considered the Nile as flowing down from the top of the world, ergo "north".

Well, where's the capital of the Western Empire?
It may be that most of it is west of the center, or perhaps they arose from settlers coming from across the eastern border.

Or perhaps DF determines empire names randomly.

Truthfully it doesn't matter anywhere, because if the universe flipped upside down in an instant, nothing would change really.

Funny thing is that the north end of the compass is accually pointing to the south end (magneticlly) of the world, so the chinese are pretty much right.
