It's a shame boats are so awful, because a custom Water World survival experience might be really neat. Are there any good boat mods? Or would people need to resort to train tracks over the water?

Archimedes' Ships is pretty good. You can make airships as well as boats. It's a little glitchy in multiplayer but singleplayer is usually fine.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

So you went from two-bit addition to 8-bit multiplication (plus some other project to the side)?

Actually I'm making a programmable computer. This giant square is the addition and subtraction, mess on the left is the ROM. These other things are prototypes of current parts.

And I can't even build a fricken house.

Houses are HARD. Especially when you don't want them to be a simple cube of wood.

Houses are easy enough- the problem is finding ore and food.

Dig along on layer 11 and ores are pretty easy to find, too.

I think I'll regret posting in this thread, but--

I've always found cave exploration to be MUCH more productive than straight-up mining.

It depends on what you're after ore-wise.  Iron?  Total agreement; caving is an excellent iron mining method.

Redstone/diamond/obsidian?  Get down to Y11 and be a thorough brutal bastard in laying your grid.

Even for the goodies- find a nice low-level cave and you'll make a LOT more progress by exploring it than sticking to the grid.
So long as you keep an eye on the z-level that is.
