We also have to consider that Minecraft isn't Mojang's only property. I don't know what the sales figgers for Cobalt and Scrolls are - they're definitely both less public and less impressive than Minecraft's, but we have to factor them in.

I actually bet Scrolls is almost as important as Minecraft in Microsoft's plans. Whereas Minecraft and its community are player-content oriented and spiritually averse to paid DLC, Scrolls was basically built from the ground up to be the opposite. I don't know that much about it, but isn't it already free-to-play/pay-to-win under Mojang's control? Microsoft is mos def gonna play that angle up.

And Cobalt... I'm not even sure how finished it is or what happened to it. There's probably plenty of space for Bill Gates to jigger with it.

Scrolls is kind of like Hearthstone, I think? I have no idea what Cobalt is.

Cobalt is a platformer arena shooter thing, which was developed by Oxeye(I think that's their name) and published by Mojang.
Scrolls is a card game, but it's not like Hearthstone. There's 5 lanes, each with two spaces(or more? I forget) that you can place a card. Your goal is to destroy the obelisks that sit behind each lane. I think you won if you destroyed three of them or something.

So what is the legal status of Cobalt's relationship with Microsoft if it kinda is Mojang's game and kinda isn't?

Pokémon is not developed by Nintendo, but it sure as hell is a Nintendo game.

So thirty pieces of silver is 2.5 billion now. Inflation, huh?
You're not accounting for the fact that a single silver coin (about 1 oz., which sells for roughly $20.72) is slightly more valuable than a dollar.  Doing a quick, rough estimate of dollars to silver and we get 120,656,370.65 silver coins.  Roughly 7.5 million pounds of silver.
...
Which mods' silver? I bet theres at least two mods that use it.

This is the thirty pieces of which SealyStar spoke.

So, it's really a thing....  2.5 billion, yarrr.  My daughter won't care, but she might lose her Minecraft buddy if Microsoft is a poor caretaker.  Time will tell.

No no, I caught the meaning.  I was just nitpicking at the grammar of it. :P  That and spontaneous math is kinda fun sometimes.

All we can be sure of is that every alternating version of Minecraft will be a buggy, barely functional mess.

Now wait for Oracle to try and buy DF ... once one tech company has a block game you know they're all going to want one.

Someone pointed this out on the Minecraft subreddit... what if Microsoft integrates their Azure servers into Minecraft? Like, you could click a button and spin up an Azure server to play on with your friends. That would be huge. Because then the next generation of web developers would have grown up tinkering around with Azure servers, and so Azure would become the de facto standard for cloud hosting. I would be very surprised if that was not at least part of their goal in this purchase.

The real reason Microsoft paid that much for Minecraft:
Minecraft is the next generation's Pokemon. That's why it's worth $2.5 billion.
