You mean like this mod for 1.2.5?
It lets you decide on layers to add below or above the overworld 'layer', such as skylands, more rock, nether caves, empty space and upside-down overworlds.

It's buggy and still being updated to 1.4.5, but I think it's a pretty good proof of concept.

It's a little slow but that's to avoid issues with sand and gravel. If I made it a little taller and used GPS then I could solve the issue that way.

Edit: A quick look inside. I don't normally like using WR if I can help it but I wanted to make this as small as possible. I'm pretty pleased with how compact I got it.

That's awesome. It flies to a location and then extends in each direction?

How does it get to a target depth? I see no breakers on the bottom.

Hmm... how do you get fireworks in the new update? The only thing I can find is 'Fireworks star' which does absolutely sod all.

You combine the firework star with paper and up to 3 gunpowder to get a firework rocket. It's shapeless, I think.

I was there since "day one" I got it early on, and watching this game for good or worse is the coolest freaking thing I've ever done.


I dont play it anymore but since I've seen it come form nothing to what it is now is just awsome

Pretty much what Jack_Bread said, with some additional caveats.

1 paper + 1 gunpowder gives you the weakest rocket, with no firework star (you'll see a trail when it's launched, and nothing else).
As you add additional gunpowder (up to 3), the rocket will travel longer (and thus higher) before exploding.
Adding a firework star to a given rocket will make it explode into that particular pattern. The more stars you add, the more types of explosions you can have go off simultaneously, with the explosion types governed by what you crafted the star out of.

 New nether ore, Nether Quartz. Netherrack can be smelted into Nether Bricks, crafted into Nether Brick blocks.

 Buncha new redstone goodies, like two new pressure plates, a chest that emits a redstone signal when opened, a redstone signal comparer, light sensor and a redstone block.
 
 New hopper item. Seems to transmit items sideways and down. Can deposit into rail chests.

 Inventory management addition: If you drag a stack over multiple inventory slots the stack will be automatically split evenly to those slots. Say you are crafting bread, you'll drag wheat over three squares and the game will automatically split the stack into thirds.
