Look... Notch has a habit of bringing up blue-sky ideas without making it clear that they are just ideas, not definite promises.

And it sure doesn't help that there has never been a really clear development roadmap for the game. 

But really, I do not understand why people get so upset about the game never getting idea X or even roadmap feature Y.

• Tiny dev studio.  One-man garage startup for a long time.
• Minecraft is not an AAA game.  Not ever intended to be.
• Minecraft is not the sole focus of the company.
• Emphasizing that, Notch's life dream is to make games.  Plural.

The only promise they made is stated in their license:

A thing or two. Notch no longer is a one man studio. He is now working primarily on his new spaceship game and the team at Mojang is working on minecraft. And since they took over development has sped up amazingly.

It's not quite AAA yet but looks like it's headed that way long run. Check some of the upcoming patch notes and their recent frequency compared to pre 1.0. Very different.
