Simple, introduce a food requirement for farm animals. Sheep already eat grass to regrow wool, simply add that into all other passive mobs that you can farm. Pen gets too overcrowded? Animals starve to death because of a lack of grass, leaving room for the rest to eat.

Some kind of trough which you can put wheat in to automate breeding in a controlled way could work.

Or requiring animals to be made fertile in the current way, but then letting them breed for x amount of young before becoming infertile. It'd make farming a lot more worthwhile if you didn't have to hand deliver every individual animal.

Based on what you guys are saying just a few posts back, if they had rabbits in the game the whole continent could potentially be flooded and overrun, even overtaken if they were hostile rabbits. Haha.

I'm currently playing on a flatworld, hard mode, trying to move from one village to the next in the desperate search for steel.  I need the steel to make buckets.  That way, I can:

Make an infinite water supply

Try to make a cobblestone generator. 

I've got a diamond pick ( yay for the 3 diamonds in the blacksmith's chest ) so if I accidentally create obsidian, not that much of a loss. 

I just hope I can survive the slimes...

A very large number. More than you can reasonably expect to visit in a lifetime.

With tactical mining, you could probably make a cobblegen without buckets. Depending on how close the farm is to the forge.

That...would be nigh impossible with all the slimes jumping around.  Is a dirt corridor ( to protect me ) feasible?  As long as the distance between said forge and farm is not too great.

Hmm, how about using the well instead of the farm water?

   The well or a farm right there would be quite workable since the lava starts off higher then ground level giving you a little leeway.
