I like the idea of my mates being able to drop into my game without us having to pay for a server.

But you can just host a server on your computer either way. You also have to do everything you would normally do for a server (such as port forwarding UP&P or Hamachi). It's the same.(probably)

Maybe each player has their own inventory inside.

According to the minecraft wiki, the ender chests will have one inventory across an entire server.

Yeah, the primary function they're touting is that it will be useful for cross server trading.

Fun fact: hosting a 1.2.5 (and lower) server on your computer uses about 1.7x the memory and 2.4x the processor time of hosting a multiplayer game strait from the client. (Estimated, of course).

They'd need to fix a LOT of bugs though. However, they'd only have to fix things once and implement things once.

Not quite. Bukkit's a server mod (still exists and is in full swing ), just the lead developers of it were hired by Mojang to make a better server and do most of this ssp-to-smp conversion.

After abandoned mines features got really stupid and half assed. The only thing I've liked since 1.0 is lamps.

The things I liked were larger biomes (I don't know if this was post1.0.0 or not, but it's great), melons, ability to plant said melons, the Anvil one (though I haven't been able to use this yet), ... and a few more.

I don't care about biomes, though very tall mountains would be a help.

That's the thing I hate the most. Apparently that should go away with 1.3
