So you're going to record yourself kind of wandering around the world holding some dirt and stone and wood, and sometimes running in terror from any hostile mob?

Why run?  It's possible to fight zombies, maybe skeletons with enough maneuvering. 

Creepers and spiders...I'm actually doing a run of this now, and I'm about to fight a spider.  Will report back. 

EDIT: Aaaaaand I've just managed to kill a spider in single combat using nothing but a bone.  Really, one on one fights with any mob are pretty easy, with proper timing, and even with a sword and bow, you have to run away from large groups. 
Same if you have no real weapons.

Nope, it's very possible to do stuff like that.
And if I find a village it's even easier to kill mobs (bucket + lava). Of course it wouldn't be possible to "win" this way (ender eyes require crafting ) but other than that it could work out very well.

If that sucks, then just no crafting table - torches, ender eyes, and such are OK then.

And what would also be fun would be a mod that allows you to "craft in the world" as in place blocks to make bigger stuff.

Just a random pic from my "no crafting" run.  That's my very simple and self-designed "Early Human" Skin.  And...those are all my items.  I had a run in with two spiders, a creeper ( thing nearly killed me ) and a zombie, whose flesh I had eaten.

I pretty much find a nice cave underground and pillage it for resources.
And every time I get lost. Each time I delve for resources, searching with abandon, I forgo caution.
Then, as my supplie of torches diminishes, I have but to make my way to the surface.
It takes me days now.

I used to get lost too, but then i learned a neat trick : I always place my torches on the same side of the tunnels while exploring. It means that i always know if i'm going towards the exit or not, depending on which side the torches are. It's not completely foolproof but it really reduced the time i spend lost.

I just dig at a slope.  Face forward, dig at head height, then the three blocks above it.  Gravel falls in front of you, not on you.  Most other things you will spot in time to block them off with a convenient cobblestone block.

Always have a torch where you are standing when digging up. It breaks up sand and gravel for you.

   Yeah a torch at your feet and your mostly good. Sand and gravel break, water won't kill you by itself, and lava takes a few moments to actually fall so you can avoid it. Mobs could be a problem but then again aren't they always? Another thing is if you are not waiting long enough to check for liquid drips and are slow enough to not respond to lava its almost your fault for it at that point.

Yeah but then you might pop up anywhere, and I'm in a tundra biome so it all looks the same, and my compass always points to my ORIGINAL spawn instead of my bed.
It's been pretty exciting, coming back from a hunting mission, snow blowing in my eyes, the sounds of mobs surrounding me, my sword at the ready. Good times.

   Hey Solifuge, I tried out your Dwarrowdwelf hardcore map and recorded a quick video of it so just to let you know I will be uploading it if you don't mind. I managed to die just ~20 minutes in because what I thought was a single skeleton was two.

Edit: Its uploading right now so only a hundred or so minutes before its up
